I have a 520 tranny I want to use for a hybrid with a 555 and an OBX, but the identification tag is long gone.
How can I tell if its a 87-88 or an 89 model?

Isn't there a big spline and small spline?
No.
Take it apart, then look at the intermediate shaft.

Few ways you can tell. Is the VIN stamp still readable? It will have the last 8 if its a factory trans and the first didget will tell you the model year. If you cant read that just pull off the 5th gear speed cover and look to see if there is a big nut holding 5th gear on the input shaft or a retaining clip. If its a nut its an 89.....
Top cover, look at the 1-2 synchronizer assembly. Single brass rings its 87-88, no brass ring its 89.
Awesome. Thanks for the replys. I'm going to tear into it today.
