Thread: Battery "relocation" and rear disconnect switches.

Battery "relocation" and rear disconnect switches.

When (under NHRA rules) do you need a rear disconnect switch for moving a battery? I understand moving it to the trunk requires a switch, but what about some less radical moves like if you
    1. Move the battery from one side of the car to the other (ie. mounting it on the passenger-side) do you need it?
    2. Mount the battery in the fender in front of the front wheels (ie. like a Stratus.)
    3. If mount it partially in the fender but the terminals are accessible from the engine bay?

Any of those possibilities require a remote disconnect?

    Thanks

I have already read that thread. He was asking about a hatch mounted battery. I am asking what the definition of "relocate" is. If I keep the battery in the engine bay am I ok? Or do I have to keep it in the factory location?

    straight from NHRA... "Battery Relocation
If the battery is not in the stock location, and relocated to the trunk for example, you must have an external
cut-off switch on the back of the car which cuts off the electrical system and must also stop the car from
    running."

whether you want to chance it and try to fool tech that the passenger side is indeed the stock location, thats on you, but NHRA clearly states....

With some of the scary !@#$ I've seen pass tech I wouldn't worry about it if you're just moving the battery from one side to another in the engine bay. Just use common sense and make sure that the new location securely mounts the battery and the cables are protected. If it looks like you bungee corded a battery in there somewhere I would hope they would not allow you to run it.
