    3.0 V6 oil pan R&R questions

Someone contacted me about fixing an oil pan leak on their V6. I'm not familiar with maintenence of the V6 so I want to know how hard of a job it is to remove and replace the oil pan. I know the 4 bangers require removal of the lower trans shield to get the pan off easily. Is there any tricks to removing and replacing the V6 pan? stuff in the way? Does everyone just use a bead of RTV like the FSM states? It says sealant must not be forced out from "this area" I'm assuming that's around the rear main?

remove front motor mount, remove starter, removing trans shield,

then its a series of 10mm bolts iirc to pull the pan off

felpro has a gasket available but stock, they dont have one. you should be using the RTV as suggested.

looking at the pics the starter is on the radiator side of the block? To get the trans shield out will I have to loosen the block to tranny bolts like on a 2.2/2.5?

i dont think so. the back side of the block has a "brace" bolted to the block and the tranny. im pretty sure that must be removed. the top bolts for the tranny should not have to be touched.. unless mine is different for some reason

and yes, starter is on the raditor side. its easy to pull off. you need to remove. two nuts hold the harness on, then one bolt holds the starter on. its a 16mm IIRC.

its straght forward once you get under there and look at it.

if your fixing it for a oil leak make sure it's not the front cam or crank seal .

gawd I hope not. I have not seen it yet so I don't know.

One question. What do you guys think is a fair price to charge for doing the oil pan gasket?

    Re: 3.0 V6 oil pan R&R questions

The 3.0 I just bought has a "leaking pan" that the previous owner failed to fix. He put a gasket on. Supposedly those just do not work because of the around the crankshaft pan hump. Higher quality RTV like great stuff is a good idea.

Not sure if mine is really something else leaking. Hopefully its not a seal on the car you are fixing but its very possible. Front mainseal = hours of work taking the passenger side of the engine off. I take the oil pump off and then found out you can get a new seal from felpro in a kit of parts that comes with a whole bunch of oil pump gaskets (various 6g72) Rear main = you know what :P

You might be able to sneak it off without disturbing the trans shield or starter... depends, sometimes it's barely under the edge of it, and the shield isn't tight against it. Might need a thin 10mm 1/4" drive with a 3" 1/4" extension for the bolts that side.... but I think you'd have trouble getting a fat 1/2 drive 10mm or 10mm impact on the bolts anyway, due to clearance the pan side.

Yes, just looking for peoples thoughts if it is just the oil pan on a fair price since the owner is asking me. $60? $80? $100? The owner knows how much I hate doing pans in the car.

i remember the starter and trans shield being in the way of getting some of the 10mm bolts off.... but ive only done it once.

Maybe it's an A670 thing. Swear mine just barely pokes over the outer lip of the pan and isn't down inside it or anything. Did have some foam stuff stuffed in there to stop it rattling, but didn't replace it last time it came off.
