    Stall help!

Ok, as some of you know, i have issues building boost at the line. I first ran a Neon TC that stalled at 3K, It was awesome around town and gave me wicked MPG, I swapped it out for a high stall and lost 75-100 km's a tank, I need my mpg back so I am planning on putting a Neon TC back in but 3500 stall, so do you guys think that with a 2 step, I will be able to build boost on it?

Yes, but the later one with thrust bearings instead of washers.

Did you modify it to get the additional 500 rpm stall? How did it work when you had it in before?

I haven't bought it yet, just wondering if the 3500 stall will make a difference with a 2 step or just stick with the 3K stall and 2 step.

What rpm is at when driving on the highway? If the stall was higher than the rpm at cruise...... would be why you lost mpg, if you put in that 3500 converter wont the mpg still suffer? Most 2 steps have different time between bang bang bang, i use a msd 6AL box with a 3 step module with a 2800 pill and the T2 turbo builds about 10psi with my 555. It maybe just me but if you listen some different 2 steps they have a different cycle time on 4 cly cars, listen to DJ's car with the MS 2 step and pick mine for an example.

Well after putting it in, I thought my trans was slipping, its that loose up until it hits the stall at 4500 rpm, on the highway at 120 Km/h, I am revving out over 4K, thank god I kept the LU. The Neon converter is nice and tight but didn't stall with my old setup, but I never used a 2 step. The Neon TC was so zippy around town, this converter, you can feel how much power your losing, hence why I want to go back to the lower stall to gain the power and MPG back.

Have you considered spending the coin for a good custom converter? You can almost get the best of both worlds with a decent lockup at cruise and good stall on the line at the track. When does your setup start to make boost?

Simon get the TQ with a higher stall then mod the VB to allow lock up in 2nd and 3rd
a good friend of mine did it on his 03 2500 Cummings and when he hits lock up in 2nd you think he is going to unload the front suspension.

I have but need to face reality, I need my MPG back, gas isn't going to get any cheaper. A high stall is a trade off, and I didn't have a 2 step before, so theoritically, with that, I should be able to build boost at the line, just wondering if anyone has been there, got the badge. I do have LU now, which can lower my cruise rpm on the freeway 700+ rpm depending on how much load I have.

Not sure we can do that with the 3 speed, no one has done it so far, maybe I'll email Racersteve and see if it can be done.

I'm sure it can be done, but is it gonna be drivable on the street? With the power you make, should be no problem. I would think you make enough that if you lug the engine at a low rpm it should still pull OK. Not to mention how would you fine tune it if needed?

The problem is the turbo won't spool loading it up at the track, but around town etc, its awesome.

Going to try a 3000 stall, 2 step and a trans brake.

    Re: Stall help!

I'll bet the TCC could be set to lock up in 2nd in the tune and not even worry about the trans. Make it so it won't lock up until around 30mph to avoid any chatter or lugging.
Understand I am going by some of the TH-125 patterns I had at GM. The V6's could handle lower lockup due to the added power. The 4 cyl cars often had to get a new prom chip to move the lockup higher up due to it causing chatter and lugging. We are talking 90 hp engines, so yours should handle it ok I think.

I think you can get something that would be tight for cruising but loosen up when the power comes on but it would probably be something custom. Are mechanical diode and/or billet stator offered by any of the vendors?

Not sure that could be done, maybe I'll talk to Hugh's.

    Re: Stall help!

Well, I cleaned my K@N the other day, didn't look bad but I guess it was pretty dirty, I tried stalling the converter and I easily hit 20 psi sitting there, WTF? I just said f*ck it and ordered another Neon 3K converter online with bearings for $110 shipped and no core. I figure with the changes I am going to do, plus the 2 step, I should be able to launch with boost.

With no boost though, it is a 90HP motor.

But I get lockup on the Escort at ~35mph, 1500 RPM, at light throttle, not hard to kick it out, which was 88hp stock.
