SUCCESS!! Speed Sensor Replacement!!

Now, here is my reflection on how to do this replacment. First off though: Make sure you have OLD clothes on AND an ample supply of rags and or paper towels. There WILL BE some tranny fluid coming out when the old sensor is removed. Maybe even a drain PAN would be good. I got mine and it caught most of what didn't fall on me

Tools Used:

1/4" ratchet with 10mm socket ( short socket - not a deep well )
Medium Sized Adjustable Wrench.
Drain Pan for tranny fluid.

1st - I un-plugged the wire from under the hood. I had to climb practally on top of the engine and reached down, one arm on either side of the intake pipe, and just pulled ( not too hard mind you ) the plug for the sensor. I knew where it was from my 2 attempts from underneath. You might want to do this as well so you can spot it from above easier.

2nd - Remove the Speedometer Cable. I used a medium size adjustable wrench. the cable came off fairly well / easy.

3rd - Grab ahold of the part of the old sensor that is sticking out of the transmission extension housing. This is the part that HAD the speedo cable attached to it. While you have a hold on it, twist it some and at the same time PULL UP. It will pop out with some force but not a whole lot.

At this point get the rags / towels / pan and let the tranny drain into the pan.

After the tranny has drained some ( it was still dripping even after 10 - 15 minutes ) You need to remove the rest of the old sensor that is still in the tranny. 1st you need to remove the 10mm bolt. Then this part just sort of pops out as well. This is the part of the sensor you will need for the new sensor - the BLUE GEAR.

Un-clip the BLUE GEAR from the old sensor and push it on to the new sensor until it "clicks" on.

Get back under the car / van and fit the new sensor into the tranny. You might need to twist it a bit until the BLUE GEAR meshes into the tranny but you'll know when it does - it will sit flush with the tranny and the fluid will stop dripping

Now just bolt the new sensor down, re-attach the speedo cable and plug in the new sensor.

And, don't forget to top off the tranny with fluid.

EDIT: As Ken has pointed out, the gear on my car is BLUE but there are different colors based on tire size. Your's may be a different color.

CONGRATS... BTW, There are 3 gears based on tire size... Blue, yellow, and white.

Heh, that's not the only thing I've used of hers on the car.

No, at the time I was having tranny fluid dripping in / on my face so I asked my son ( 4.5 yrs old ) to go get the paper towels QUICK!! He's learning early I can tell you that...

Pics are no more. Once I found out (after this procedure) that my problems were internal, I decided to sell the 600. So I started cleaning house and cleaned those out as well. Sorry...

I'm kicking myself now because I've seen a couple of other threads about the SDS.

Basically, from memory: Make sure you have a smaller sized ratchet wrench. The normal standard size ones don't fit where you need to fit it to get the one bolt off. I then climbed on top of the drivers side of the engine and reached down to undo the electrical plug.

Once you get the one and only (at least on my car) bolt off holding the actual base of the sensor down, just grab the whole thing, after removing the speedo cable, and twist and pull up on it. ***Make sure you're not under the sensor but more like off to one side. There will be some tranny fluid leaking out***

Afterwards it's just a matter of swapping out gears and clips, then the whole thing just pops back in.
