Non Lockup converter in lockup trans

I have always wondered this. Can you run a non lockup converter in a lockup trans?

I think the input shaft spline count is different. So I think no.

No, spline count is different. If you want to run the LU converter and not have it work, simply swap the input shaft or vice versa.

Re: Non Lockup converter in lockup trans

Is there a disadvantage of using a lockup converter and eliminating the lockup funciton on the valve body vs running a non lockup converter. Also does anyone know the stall speeds of the neon converters?

Where I am going with this is when I do my 2.4 swap I will be using a 31th neon trans. I really dont want to dump a lot into the trans until I get everything else set up correctly so I will be starting with a good used trans and I was thinking abiout new clutches, extra clutches, eliminate accumulator, other VB mods and differential pin savers. For a converter I was thinking about just using a neon converter for now. I thought about a TD converter but since the splines are different I would have to swap the input shaft as well. I also read somewhere that a later 4spd converter will worth with the 31th trans and since the turbo was available with a 4spd there is a turbo higher stall converter. I would upgrade the converter and anything else that is needed to the trans at a later date.

Re: Non Lockup converter in lockup trans

Neon converters stall around 3000 rpm, apparantly the PT turbo converters stall even less. I used a Neon converter and loved it, instant power, way better mpg BUT I couldn't make boost when drag racing off the line as it wouldn't slip enough, but I am hopefully curing that with a 2 step as I am putting the Neon converter back in. I lost 75-100 km's a tank putting a high stall in,
