Plus, drive defensively and leave plenty of space between you and the car in front of you goes a long way.
I seem blessed thus far (touch wood) with an "idiot radar" that gives me a second or two advantage....
... a lot of people could use some reaction training though, easy to freeze on the brake and brace on the wheel, instead of cadence braking and steering out of trouble... you need to scan continuously and keep a 3D mental map of where all other vehicles are or should be, so you can end up in the empty space. Need to get to know your vehicle and how weight transfers on the springs in a hard maneuver too, so you can time it instead of fight it. Then if you're a "freezer" you have to force yourself to do more than one action. Braking isn't enough, especially if you're just gonna lock up, swerving isn't enough, you need to be ready to whip the wheel back again, or you're just gonna spin out, or punt the barrier. Have to get used to a sequence of actions.
Sometimes in tight traffic, the only "safe" space is where the dipsh!t just came from, this is when you've got someone within 15ft of your arse, who you can't rely on to brake, the a-hole who is trying to merge into you, and a solid wall of traffic in the other lane. In this sitch, you might need the merest tap of the brake, while using the whole width of the lane the opposite side of trouble and as soon as you see his bumper, go right back over the other way and tap the gas... putting yourself where he was... because it's the only space there is... The reason for this would be that you've only got 1 car length to work with in your lane, and you don't know if it's safe to rely on it... because dipsh!t might go on the brakes again to go another lane over, because he's missing his exit, or he's trying to make the left lane because he'd feel silly having his accident at 70mph when he could have it at 90... Ideally.... you'd have your full 2 second gap in front of you... but this does not work in busy metro area traffic... it gets filled as soon as you make it... if you kept trying to back off and leave it, you'd be going 20mph in a short space of time... so you kinda have to pick compromise space... for safety, either pick something to follow that you can see through, or something way bigger that must have about twice your braking distance.
