    Re: best final drive question

I've learned from personal experience; 3:50 hybrid is a Great tranny for the street, not sure about auto-cross, but I would imagine in Any application where your either badly out powering your tires Or your running out of gear.

For Drag applications using slicks, proper clutch and set-up so that your hooking well, Any reduction of gearing from the 3:85 set-up will Slow you down! ie. IF I put a 3:50 geared hybrid in the Charger I would go Slower, If a 3:05 hybrid, Slower yet!

The Only advantage of a hybrid in an application like mine is IF your running out of fourth gear Before the end of the track (low reving set-up trying to trap high MPH) you would obviously gain by dropping your gearing to get your powerband back in line for the end of the 1/4 mile. Or a bandaid for a set-up that's not hooking well enough.

So again, Great street trans, I really miss the 5th gear on the hwy that my hybrid had! I was going to do a final BtB just because. (I ran the 3:50 gear hybrid BtB years ago when I didn't have the Charger set up well and it was still a toss up between which one was better) After experiencing what the Charger did last fall on the stock 568 I don't need to waiste my time doing any BtB, the outcome is obvious enough.

Traction is key... spinning to the 1/8th on 24.5's with the 3.50 FDR, I do not think I would go quicker with the 3.85?

Agreed, it's a fine line and a two edged sword! IF your already fighting for traction with a 3:50 geared hybrid, 3.85 FD is most likely going to be Worse!

IF the Charger would have gone 1.6X 60', 4.6X 330', I would have been left to believe that a 3:50 geared hybrid Might be able to hook me better as there would be nothing unusual about those #'s for any of our trannies. It's only because it layed down an unreal hook that I could see that less gear is going to = slower.

100+ mph 3rd gear is frickin sweet. I didnt realize this until i had a car that did it. Now im specifically building my van to have a 100mph 3rd gear.

Strictly talking street driving right now, and i do 100 mph pretty often where i live. Might not be relevant to a lot of people.

Hahaha the funny thing is that the van probably will hit top speed right after shifting to 4th with that kind of gearing.. but im hoping to hit or beat my previous 27mpg average with a roots-blown v6 so the tall 5th is intended to help with that.

A couple years ago, in the T2 Shadow (555/3.50:1) I was pulling on an Evo 8, deep into 5th, making the stock GarretT work to push ~27psi thru that stock longblock, LOL... never looked at the speedo, probably a good thing, LOL!

You said it. It looks as though I'll be putting together a 3.50FD trans for the Omni, but I still want to do a 3.05FD version some day. Freeway monster for sure.

I've been collecting transmissions from JYs for a little while now. I've only got a few of them in my basement, but they have a lot of good parts in them. I've been lucky in that regard.

You should keep an eye out for cheap 525 transmissions as the synchros are the same for the 3-4 on everything if I'm not mistaken. I've also scored most of the necessary trans tools on Ebay for cheap too. Keep an eye out, be patient, and you can do it for much less.

I have been runing the 3:50 568/523 obx since it was introduced back yeras ago in my GLH(low 12s) I have also had a 555, and a 523 with the 3:50 ratio
Good combo, a little expensive. If i had to do it all over again i would just use the 523 with the 3:50
Got me over 160MPH if your having traction problems the obx is a nice way to go, never had ant issue with the combo.basicly the more power you make the lower the gear ratio works better,to a point of course.

This is good to hear! I just found a nice 520 3:50 that I was thinking about putting in an L-Body with A 2.5L, sounds like it should make a fun car.
