Thread: My v6 Drag Week build

When I bought it, it 3 springs in it I think. I removed all but the lightest... No idea how much pressure it has. At the track I did toy with running a stronger spring in the wastegate...

See how much boost you get with no boost controller. Best to run the spring that supports near your minimum boost (which seems to be 12psi) so that you have expandability. If you have a 4 or 6psi spring, I can see why you had problems at high elevations. Also, the knockoffs can often use TIAL springs, which are progressive when some of the knockoff springs are linear.

Ed, you mess with your wastegate yet? Many Chinese wastegates can fit Tial springs though they might not give the same boost (no idea). Hard to imitate high elevation at your house.

No, I have some other things that have my attention right now (rebuilding the engine for my son's car and putting some used heads on my pastor's car.) I would like to take the car out for another pull at the drag strip and see if I can get it into the 11's before I do winter changes...)

I did drive the car into work today. On the street I don't pull max boost and if I tried I would just smoke the tires...

I plan on driving it to watch Drag Week when it comes to Indy...

Well, disconnect the controller and try pure wastegate and maybe you can hook up + findout how much boost you should be making on the spring you have.

Re: My v6 Drag Week build

I need to post a full story from this years Rocky Mountain Race Week, but I thought I was out because of a spun a bearing... Finally got around to tearing apart the engine. The rod bearing was not spun! The problem was I blew out the ring land on the #4 piston...

The mystery right now is why did I break a ringland? I had the rings gapped pretty wide and the A/F was pretty rich in boost...

The engine (6g74) will get repaired, but it is going to go into my son's '89 Daytona! My Shadow will get a 3.8L (6g75) and a few other upgrades...

Nice! Interesting problem but if your son isnt trying to trap 122mph there's a good chance the issue won't recur.

Mivec or non Mivec for your 3.8?

Dont push the red button. You hear me?

Non-Mivec,but I think a U-pull-it yard near me has some Mivec cars now...

I suspect that he would like to trap at over 122 mph (not that I will let him start there...) That said, the problem happened during some "testing" after I fixed an ignition issue. I was making a series of short high-boost passes trying to make sure it wouldn't fail again. I plan on checking the gap of those rings and see if they match what I was remembering...

Re: My v6 Drag Week build

Over the weekend I was tearing down the block getting ready to hone it. I noticed a scratch in the #6 bore. Pretty deep, more than honing would remove... Looking at the piston that came out of that bore I noticed that the oil control ring was missing part of the rail... That correlates to the position of the scratch... Not sure how long it has been like that. Might explain why the engine seemed to have high levels of blow-by...

Pulled out another engine that had a spun rod bearing and tore it down. Everything looked good other than the #4 and #5 rod bearings were spun... So I will use that block with the crank and rods from the original engine. The plan is to drop on some 6g75 heads, but since the combustion chamber on them is larger, I need different pistons. As it happens, XG350 use a variation of the 6g74 (DOHC instead of SOHC) and their piston has less dish...

With a little luck I will be headed to the U-pull-it this weekend to pull heads. Then after Thanksgiving we can get the engine assembled!

Thanks for the update! I'm also glad to see that it's still around. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only 6g7x guy left around here.

Nope, I just acquired my first 3.0 Daytona. I'm going to need a lot of tips on how to make them run.

Re: My v6 Drag Week build

Thanks for the info Brent, I would like to know more about that Sundance. I just bought a 91 Daytona ES 3.0L, and could use just a little more oomf.
I'm thinking of milling the heads to bump up the CR, cold air intake and 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust. Anyone make better cams for the 3.0?
I will not get too crazy with this car, as it is a showroom mint car, and I plan on driving it a lot. Just wondering what they are capable of NA.

Custom cams are the only option I know of right now. Crower may still do them, Ondonti is having delta do some currently I think. Replacing the stock 8.8:1 pistons with 10:1 versions from a 92-95 diamante sohc will go a long way to make it peppier.

Re: My v6 Drag Week build

To me the most informative cam anecdote is that a ~315whp 3.0 car with a very wrong turbo went from maxing out his injectors at 15psi to maxing them out at 7psi. I think i own those cams? I can't remember whose i bought. I havent used them yet.

I think the main key to n/a 3.0 is big plenum, big throttle body, cams, and spin it higher. Its all supportable on stock computer right now as long as its a 5spd car.

    Porting upper and lower intake.
Larger TB. 52mm or 58mm (vs stock 46mm)
    Ported heads.

My 3.0L Daytona is a 4spd. automatic, What I really want is more bottom end torque. Are there different transfer gear ratios for the A604?If so, what is available for lower ratio gears?

For a very short answer, yes, there are different transfer gears available for the A604 over the years/models. What they are, came in, and interchangeability... I am not the expert here on that for sure.

Yes, there are possible FD ratios for the 604 from ~3.2 to 4.28 by mixing and matching factory ring and pinion and transfer gear sets. Your stock trans should be a ~3.6:1 fd. The 4.28:1 parts are in Chrysler Pacificas with the 4spd (later years got 6spd auto). 4.28 X 0.69 (4th gear) gives you the same ~3.0:1 top gear ratio as the typical turbo 3spd (but with lockup converter!), so it's not as aggressive as it may seem at first glance. There are also extremely common 3.9:1 parts and somewhat less common 4.1:1 parts. If you're taking the trans down i also highly recommend to install a dodge neon torque converter. The 3spd lockup converters will fit the 604s from 90-up and the 2.0L converters make a very cheap high stall converter in a 3.0. I ran one in a 1996 3.0 Caravan i had and was very pleased with it on a stock motor.
