That stinks, it used be be a really good time over there. Right on, thats the problem I am having with traction. If we get to our track when it opens, the first 3 or four passes are good with the drag radials, after that spin, spin, spin. The other problem is that we pretty much have to circle around to get back in line, so no cool down on our cars which is really tough. I made 8 passes in less than an hr the other night.

AJ, rounding up your 21/60 ring and pinion would be 2.56 x 1.06 (multiplying) would equal 3.02/3.03 (either rounding up or down). 2.60 final drive if using .91 gears. My 85 NY'er has 2.60 final drive. She's a pooch coming out of the hole (stocker). Shifts into second automatically at 52 MPH @ WOT according to my digital speedo. Probably going to put the 1.06 gearset in.

I found 2.60's gave me the best holeshot, lol. Figures,

It should only drop my crossing RPM to 5300 or so. And, hopefully, gives better traction off the line. We'll see how that goes. Still wayyy to cold up here for the tracks to open...
I think you'll lose more rpm than you think.

Counterpoint on the 22" slicks.. they would probably work a lot better for a 2.2. I remember hearing that Rob is running 16-18psi most of the time and i know for a fact the boost level CAN = 350lb ft of torque at the crank on a 2.5...

Whereas in a 2.2 it could be as little as 250.

Combine that with running the stock, taller gearing in an auto, and i think the 22s would work a lot better for that setup. In any event, 23s seem to be good well into the 12s if you use them right, and most people need the traction more than the gearing.. so 22s are pretty rare in this community.

That's because you haven't hooked your fan up to your defrost switch yet to turn it on when ever yo want. My Dad's wagon is always 180* at the light.

True, the 2.2 needs more rpm to launch per say. I did like the 24's over the 22's but then I do have a heavy 2.5 van.

The defrost switch has a 9 minute timer built in so you can shut the car off and walk away while it cools. It comes in handy in AZ when it's 115* out, your engine is at 210*, and you forget to manually turn your fan on when you're a block a way from your destination. Not all of us live in a frozen tundra and don't have to worry aboot high ambient temps. :-)

I wish I lived in Az, I hate the short summers here, they seem to be shorter every year,

Good idea on the defrost switch.

Sounds kinda wore out with the 100-110 readings anyway. Wonder if you'll gain anything just from better compression (and not just from fixing the 'broken' cylinder)?

Re: Dare I say fastest VNT powered 1989 CSX

Absolutely. The night that I ran the 13.67 and my turbo gave up, I did a compression check to see where it was at. 125 across the board. So I figured swapping the new turbo on would be ok since those numbers were pretty good. I also think I found out why the motor gave up, had my main pressure/vac source slipped a hose, it was almost completely off. My bad, I usually clamp them all, but in my haste to get back to the track...

Re: Dare I say fastest VNT powered 1989 CSX

    Ouch, that sucks..

Yeah 125 is 'ok'. Thats what most of my high miles motors have read. One time i rebuilt a tbi motor and got 145 right after so i assumed a turbo motor would never hit that, but i just did a comp check on an 85 turbo motor with 55k miles on it, and it read 150 all the way across. So i guess i have hardly ever had a turbo motor with 'perfect' compression.

Most turbo motors I have rebuilt read 135-145 across the board. I just checked my lancer that now has 1000 miles on it, 135 on all four.

Speaking of the Lancer, I am headed over to AJ's shop this week to put in my new TU clutch, so hopefully by next weekend ole sl #79 will be making its first passes at the track.

Re: Dare I say fastest VNT powered 1989 CSX

Ok, I finally found some time this weekend to get this car back together.

New motor is 20 over, weisco pistons, arp rod/main bolts, crank turned 10/10, clevite 77 bearings, custom camshaft, and added a innovate wideband to keep an eye on things. also hooked up the defrost turbo timer fan switch.

Have not driven it yet, but everything sounds good just running in the garage. I have to pick up my downpipe from my buddy AJ's shop (welded o2 bung for me) on tuesday, before I venture out on the road.

I also purchased 4 new traklite 1.0's and smaller slicks(23 8.5 15). hopefully the lighter rims and smaller slicks will help my et's with the automatic trans.

Wideband won't always show, I had one bad one but my AF ratio's were good except I had random detonation, melted down on me at 20 psi,

true its not a fix all, but in this case my car started at 15 at idle and as it warmed up it kept climbing all the way to 18.9 at idle when i shut it down. i can just imagine what my poor motor was getting after 10 passes in an hour and a half.
