What's your real world gas mileage PT GT

I'm looking at a decent deal on a '05 PT GT but first wanted to get an idea from people that own them what the real-world gas mileage is on one. Thanks for any knowledge you can offer.

I've never seen more than 21 maybe 22 if really luck in mine. Thing is, seems to get the same milage no matter if you drive like grandma or get on it.

Wow, that's WAY worse mileage than I would have expected. What RPMs do you turn at what mph? How much do those weigh exactly?

Yeah...that 07 GT is way different than my wifes 04 GT auto..
At 70MPH the 07 stick is running 3K RPM while the 04 autostick turns only 2500...the 04 "feels " faster as well..no hard data on that though...thank god the wife wont be reading this....lol

Re: What's your real world gas mileage PT GT

Wow, the 5 speed RPMs are much higher at that speed than I would have anticipated. That's probably dragging you down a lot. Wasn't there a significant difference in HP between the auto and 5 speed models?

Re: What's your real world gas mileage PT GT

Mostly between years I believe.. I think 04 was rated 220 HP, 05 and higher 230 HP.
I dont believe there was a difference in HP if you chose auto or stick in any year.

Someone correct me if i'm wrong..

I'm beginning to suspect I have issues on the 07 with boost...need to get a gauge installed on it to verify..its the DD and its driven all day long between service calls for the equipment I work on. I was as surprised as you were about the 07 5 speed tuning those revs at cruise speed once i got it..
I havent had time to really play with it much as its been hard pressed running work since the very day I got it.

Damn, those are pretty crappy numbers, I would have assumed it would be close to the SRT4 numbers.

Power was always the same regardless of trans, except 03 cars were less powerful, as the injectors changed in 04+ cars. 03's had 215hp, and later ones had 220-230hp stock. The PT is pretty heavy, and it's not that aerodynamic. But surprisingly it is very quick and can corner pretty good too. The auto trans seems to have a better overdrive ratio, and probably a more relaxed axle ratio too, vs the 5 speed.

Re: What's your real world gas mileage PT GT

I must admint, I've been troubleshooting some issues over the last few weeks with a check engine light on the 07. The key dance doesnt reflect any codes.
I had a pesky P301 error that ran me thru the ringer for several months (new plugs, wires, coil, Cam Pos sensor, upper intake O-rings) and finally had to take it to the shop to have it looked into since the state inspection was running out and wouldn't pass with the error.
Was informed #1 inject would not close, and the other 3 were flowing poorly. Fuel system was gone thru, and P301's cleared. Just having trouble with that non-descriptive check engine light now..(need to get a code reader).

Forgot to mention that I've already replaced the turbo as well in a unrealted issue. The preivious owner didnt use synthetic oil, or just heat soaked the crap outta the thing. Much easier to replace than one in a Omni...

I'm hoping when I get all the bugs outta the 07, MPG and HP will improve. But there's not much i can do about the rev's it turns at highway speeds.

It's not the weight, it's its shape. My heavier (3600lbs) turbo Volvo wagon gets better MPG than the lighter PT Cruiser.

Highway cursing result in 21.5mpg in the PT, on the same road, same driver, my Volvo got 23.29mpg.

Wow, I wouldn't have guessed that this would be the case.

Re: What's your real world gas mileage PT GT

Weight is a funny thing when it comes to MPG, it's effect is more down to how you drive. Since in some respects you can treat it as a "momentum hybrid" in that a well loaded vehicle will load the motor under acceleration such that it's in a more efficient operating range, then if you use the momentum instead of wasting it in innappropriate braking, you can sometimes see your car get better mpg loaded than unloaded! .... drive heavy vehicles as if you've got no brakes and it's amazing what it does for mpg. Aero on the other hand, there's no getting round it, if it's a brick it's a brick.

PT would probably do better if you drop the front and leave the arse sticking in the air.

Just wanted to give an update on my 07 GT stick (feeling like I'm high jacking the thread now... )

Since I dropped bukoo bucks at the shop to have the injector and fuel system gone thru, I took it back to them to determine what the phantom code was on the car after I got it back from them. Turns out it was latching a P302 code that would not show in the key dance as it was very intermittent.
Anyway, they informed me the other three injectors were flowing quite poorly again with #2 to the point where they couldn’t even clean the thing out.
I told them to replace all three so I could get this issue resolved. They also looked into the fuel system again (tank and lines) and found no issues, must have been the previous owner letting gas sit in the thing for very long periods.

I’ve had it a week now since then and my MPG has improved at least 2 more MPG.
I had a service call I took yesterday for work that would result in aprox 650 of highway miles. The computer was reporting 23MPG at the end of that run…best I’ve ever had out of the car since I picked it up in in 2010.

Are injector issues common on the PT Turbo’s / NSRT4’s ?

I did hear one thing I didn’t like about the PT when I asked them to replace the fuel filter just in case. The filter is in the fuel tank with the pump. After he told me that, I told them to stand down as I didn’t care to hear how much they wanted for that. Why in the blue blazes of hell did they put that there….guess I’ll be looking into that myself

Anything neonish seems to have constant injector gumming issues.

I don't run neons personally, but keep my vehicles clean and passing emissions with flying colors with maintenance doses of isopropyl aclohol and mineral spirits in the tank every month or two. Good to do it on nice long runs where everything gets warmed up and softened, then give it some WOT "italian tune up" pulls to blow everything through.

I have owned my srt-4 for two years and have never had any injector problems. Every other month I add some lucas fuel injector cleaner to my tank to keep my fuel system clean from the gremlins in today's gas. Last summer I removed my fuel rail to inspect my fuel injectors and found all of them to be clean and shiny. My 4.0 Jeep Wrangler has had problems with carbon and dirty injectors.
