Anybody had problems getting Wiseco rings to seat?

Wondering if that's part of the issue with the 2.5 in my Lebaron.

Re: Anybody had problems getting Wiseco rings to seat?

Not if the cylinder has had the hone/glaze breaker run through it, and then cycled (moments of high pressure and vacuum) to push them against the cylinder wall. But it can happen, normally due to honing to the wrong roughness for the ring used, or the wrong angle loading too much oil on the wall...

Yeah, I never had issues with getting stock rings to seal, but the Wiseco's are thinner. Not sure if that makes them more picky/finicky about seating or not.

Re: Anybody had problems getting Wiseco rings to seat?

I wouldn't boost it much if at all, but I'd do some short WOT bursts often after up to full temp. Doing a bit more, then long pulls. That should help it seal if having issues...

My machine shop guy said to drive it to the expressway and do a 4th gear pull from 50 to 80. Let it slow back down in gear to 50. Do this a few times and it should be good to go. Obviously after warmed up and the oil is changed after the initial start up.

I've been doing just that, hasn't helped. Been driving it a couple months now. Hasn't stopped. About to pull it and drop my 2.2 in it, then go over everything in the 2.5 and see what the problem is. It is also using coolant somehow.

    Use Bon ami,

Probably wrong hone pattern or grit, as some have issues with ring seal on stock rings too.

Sadly, it does work. But I don't want to do it either.

Yeah saw Kevin jam his engine up with that stuff (Ajax actually, same thing). Lol only cause he used too much and did it wrong I think, but yeah, I'd rather pull it apart and fix it right.

What weight oil do you use? If I use a 40 weight oil my oil consumption goes down.

What operating temperature does the engine run at? I had seating problems with my 2.5 and it was related to that, did not come up to temp on break in. What thermostat do you have in the engine?

Try Sealed Power rings by Federal Mogal which have special lapped rings for quick break in. Use Amsoil break in oil with high zinc and phosphorus for quick break in. Oils now a days are too good for quick break in.

Funny I use ajax 40 years ago on a Henry J to try to get it to stop using oil.

    Either a 195 or a 180, can't remember which exactly.

Wiseco uses thinner rings than standard. Top is 1mm, 2nd is 1.2mm.

I just use Castrol GTX to break my motors in, no issues so far, knock on wood.

Yeah, they are thin but SRT4's use the same size.

^^Good to know. I would imagine the thinner rings reduce drag...but I did wonder in what other engines would that thin of ring was used and if it caused issue with oil consumption.

Re: Anybody had problems getting Wiseco rings to seat?

Over the years there have been issues with a few. The 3.5 V6 that GM had in the Intrigue was one. I know others have, but can't think of them.

Re: Anybody had problems getting Wiseco rings to seat?

What grit did they hone with and what grit do the rings call out. If you are off, it won't be happy. Rough grit on a softer ring will tear up the ring while a smooth grit on a hard ring like chrome will also fail to seat because there are no large peaks for the chrome ring to cut down.

Was this an oversized piston or stock? If the bore size is too large the rings won't have sufficient radial tension to seat in the first place or effectively become the wrong diameter for the bore. I had that happen.

.040" overbore. I honed it with a ball hone when I replaced 2 of the pistons, wondering if I got it wrong.
