    86 Horizon Build

    Hey guys,

This is probably going to be a slow moving process but I thought I would document this build.

Here is a little back story on my project...

I've always wanted an omni/horizon but kinda fell into the Shadow (bought a complete car for $50! cant pass that up right?!) I never intended to put the shadow on the street and use it for drag only. In the process I kinda ruined it by completely gutting it and removing all traces of emissions equipment. I'm basically over trying to trouble shoot and tune a car that cant be driven on the street. It sucks putting tons of work into the thing only to find out seconds into the run that something isn't right. So i decided either to try to put the shadow on the street or get something else....so why not an omni/horizon! I plan on making this car a street-able car (but not necessarily a street car) and using it for whatever may tickle my fancy (drag, autocross, road course). I will take the engine out of the Shadow and mate it to a 5 speed (still looking for a 568 btw).

Any who here is the car i found. Its an 86 carb'ed horizon with 47,000 miles. Its super clean but has been sitting a while and had bad gas in it so running is iffy. Already replaced a few fuel lines and the filters but still need to go thru the carb/ fuel tank as its spitting fuel out of the carb and into the charcoal canister. I plan on getting it running and emissioned with the current engine then the shadow engine will go in it once i get the tranny and more funds $.

    A non rusty L body
Repaint on the Horizon ? or I guess its old enough to have still gotten the good solvent based paint and not that water based crap on the later cars.
~btw I'll have a nice condition 568 fs probably towards middle to end of january~

Original paint and next to zero rust. This thing was garage kept for probably the first 20 years of its life and carport kept for the last 6. Paint might shine up nice.

    Def interested in your transmission.

    Re: 86 Horizon Build

got a rebuild for the carb and got it running OK. i aslo dropped and cleaned the fuel tank. took it to emissions and passed hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, NOX and gas cap but failed pressure test. i knew i goofed by using the old filler neck gasket as it was pretty bad...

got a new gasket for the filler and fixed the electronic choke (had it backwards so it was never really choking!) still just running ok and having some dieseling issues when i shut it off. Took it back to emmisions and passed pressure test but failed carbon monixide. limit is 15 grams/mile and i tested 22...doh.

Still tinkering for now and once i feel confident ill take it back to emissions. did some more reading on these carbs and realized i still got a lot to learn. These things are fairly complex and im not very familiar with carbs as it is.

oh and i side note i got a quote on collector car insurance...not sure if i exactly qualify or not yet tho...anybody have this??? in AZ it gets you emissions exempt!

    Re: 86 Horizon Build

    some progress.

The manifold i had made was slightly warped after using it so i had the flange fly-cut nice and flat.

got some bolts welded in so taking the turbo on/off will be easier than just nuts and bolts

and got it Thermal Barrier Coated.

also, new roller rockers and PT lifters/shims installed as well as some other things to the engine and parts are coming off the Horizon so i can pluck the engine/trans out

engine/tranny is out and the wiring harness is out.

next up cleaning the engine bay, fix a broken weld on the tranny mount, weld in a mount for the tranny strut.
