The '86 NYer Gets Air Shocks

I found out why the NYer was sitting low in the back...somebody replaced the rear shocks with regular gas Red Ryder ones, and left the air lines from the factory set up hanging in the breeze!

I got a set of Monroe air shocks for $87, and they are going on today. I'll see if the factory stuff will work with them, but if not, I'll get it sitting level and call it good. It currently sits about 1 1/2" higher in the front than in the rear.

Re: The '86 NYer Gets Air Shocks

It's about 36^ and raining here. I'm happy to have had a nice heated, dry garage to work on the car today! The factory lines from the on board compressor will work on the Monroe shocks, but you have to trim the ends off. My compressor doesn't seem to be working, so I set the shocks up with the air lines that came with them. I measured the height of the front wheel well to the floor, and then pumped the shocks up to get the same height in the rear. It took 70 psi to level it. Max pressure is 150 in the Monroes, so I'm only about 50%. It's dark out now, so I'll get pics later.

Re: The '86 NYer Gets Air Shocks

So they actually make an air shock for our application? My 85 NY sits pretty low too. Regular, not air ride suspension. So it should fit anything besides Omni and Dynasty's then? Let us know how the ride is. I haven't had an air shock on any of my cars since I was racing my Judge. That was a like another lifetime ago.
I'll take 36*. it was single digits here yesterday in MPLS, MN. I'll bet DJ's hunkering down for his winter.

Damn, my air ride has maybe 30psi in them with a full tank of fuel and me in it. Kids in the back goes up to 40-45.

OK, here is a pic with the shocks installed, and one from October with leaves in the driveway the way it was.

Re: The '86 NYer Gets Air Shocks

I've got the air ride on my wagon and it had regular shocks on it when I got and was also too low in the back. You can get a really nice air compressor out of the GM minivans like the Montana and such I think most of them had air ride in the back too.
