    96 2.0 talon non-turbo overheating

sisters car. her boyfriend put a new tstat in and now said the radiator is bad, I asked him where it was leaking, he said it wasnt. Hoses feel like they are full of pressure, I pulled the coolant temp sensor and the fans never kicked on, so I am wondering if the fans are just not working. Or maybe water pump? no smoke or nothing...never really messed with these 2.0 motors...any suggestions?

Make sure it's full of coolant first.

Check to see if the heat works (generally, if the heat works the cooling system has burped).

Does it overheat at idle or while driving?

If your getting air pockets, check or replace the rad cap, if its still doing it, take out the thermostat, watch for bubbles, sounds like the head gasket is leaking.

Is this the 2L neon engine with the manifolds on backwords or the mitsu engine? I would think the fan should come on when the coolant sensor is pulled. Are you sure you pulled the correct sensor? I think one is for the dash and the other for the computer. You want the one that triggers a check engine light.

I tested the fans individually and both work, I think Im chasing the signal to the fan, bad sensor, relay, something. I manually turned on the fan at normal run temp at idle for 5-10min and was stable, shut fan down but couldnt get temp to rise until I held throttle at about 2400rpm on and off for a few minutes then the temperature climed to 3/4, I turned the fan back on but temp did not rise nor fall.

Since its a N/A car; these should be like the Neons (420A is a Chrysler engine, but the head is on the other direction) and there should be a fan relay; those were pretty common to fail, as well. I'd check that...

Easy way to see if the radiator is bad.. Get the temp up close to overheating and go feel the radiator near the outlet that sends coolant to the motor. If you can hold your hand on it that means the radiator is restricted and isnt flowing. If you have an IR pyrometer that's how i check them.

    Re: 96 2.0 talon non-turbo overheating

so the more testing I have done, the car shuts down at 3/4 temp, radiator is not hot, have heat inside, pressure at the cap. The engine itself does not get hot, no bubbling coolant, steam nothing, no leaks. Im thinking this is an electrical issue, this car should run till the motor melts hot, when the car shuts down it wont restart, like it has no spark. Any ideas?

Check for codes, you'll need a scanner. Could be a crank or cam sensor issue, too many things to guess at.

Can you get a thermometer to check the actual temp of the antifreeze vs. what the gauge is saying? Sounds like this may be a Coolant temp sensor. It might not restart due to the fact it is thinking it's hot?

Sometimes you can go all over a buddies cooling system which he insists is acting up, only to find after a couple of hours of scratching your head that he ran it out of oil.
