First TD to leave me Stranded!

    Greetings!
Well, this evening, my 86 Turbo Z project left me stranded about 25 minutes from home.

Earlier this week, I noticed some stumbling/missfiring. The gas tank was very low, and about year-old gas at that. I filled it up with 93 octane, and ran some Sta-bil for ethonol in there, and it seemed to run much better.

Tonight, it started to have a slight misfire, but generally ran OK. Went out after I was leaving this restaurant, and it would crank over very well, but did not start.

I swapped out the HEP in the parking lot, no help.

I have new wires, plugs, cap, rotor.

Fuel pump is priming just fine.

I'm reading a Code 26 which I gather means "Peak injector current has not been reached"

The injector harness does have a bunch of electrical tape on it, so maybe I should swap that out?
Could a bad power module or logic module cause this? Please advise. I left the car at the restrauant and got a ride home. I plan to go back tomorrow, but I need to know what parts I should bring to try to swap in.
    Thanks!
    -Lee

I would bring another injector harness and power module and try those.

Yeah I was thinking a Power Module as well. I didn't replace the coil, its an original Mopar, but with the code 26, that steers me away from thinking its a bad coil. Any other thoughts?

Actually, code 26 on minimopar reads as follows.

Description: Injector driver circuit 1 open or shorted

Check wiring connections and bring a spare PM as suggested. That should clear it up in no time.

Injector sub harness or Lm seem to be the easily replaceable items you should bring.

Re: First TD to leave me Stranded!

Yeah the first code readout I quoted was from Haynes. Then I looked it up in my FSM and it said about the first circuit. I do have an extra Logic Module, so I'll grab that as well. Can't hurt. The amazing thing is though, for as many issues as this project car had/has, ever since I bought it, it could sit for months on end, and it always started up at the first turn of the key. So this was a bit surprising, but hey, after all, it is a 25 year old neglected and abused car... Thanks for all the quick replies

When I make comments like that I always have to ask myself if it's one of those bits of knowledge I should be proud to know off of the top of my head or not. Thank goodness we're all in this together. We'd never hear the end of it otherwise.

I figure it will be a simple broken wire or bad connection. Which will make my response overkill.....like usual....LOL.
Quite frankly, I was surprised no one else had answered before me. You guys know I was just being funny, right?

Re: First TD to leave me Stranded!

Well, I went back to the restaurant this morning, turned the key and it fired right up! So I drove it home, but its not running well. It is misfiring, and at lights, it never stalled, but the idle dipped down and I had to feather the gas pedal, then it would idle properly.
Would a leaking fuel pressure regulator cause these symptoms? I did have a smell of gas every now and then, and back home, I yanked the vacuum lines off the FPR, and smelled gas. The fuel lines and filter are all new.
Would a bad FPR cause a no start while warm? As soon as I had it started, I moved all the wires to the injectors and the PM and it made no difference, so I'm guessing the wiring is OK.

I checked the codes after I got it back home, and it reads 17 and 26. The engine is definitely running warm enough. In fact, this is my first TD with a vented hood, and I can see heat waves (not smoke) coming from that vent, and the heater works very well. Are those heat waves from the hood normal with the vented hoods?

I see turbidity coming from the hood vent in my Omni whenever it's cold enough.

A bad reg will definitely hinder running ability. Hook up a FP gauge and pinch off the return line. If it pegs the gauge you know the pump is good. If you don't have 55PSI static on the gauge while at idle you'll know it's the reg.

the heat from the hood is normal. I'm sure one of the reasons the first gen hoods were vented was for the sake of cooling heat soak, I read somewhere the vent draws air from beneath the car through the engine bay. didn't you neglect the rail ground once earlier in the project? give that a good inspection, if it is frayed in the least I would just replace it. at the very least make sure it is contacting cleanly.

Yes, the FPR will cause it to run like that. Sitting over night would allow the pressure to bleed off and the liquid fuel to evaporate. So it most likely would start and then run like crap with the extra fuel being sucked into the engine. Try replacing it.

Re: First TD to leave me Stranded!

The ground strap has been replaced and is clean and in good shape.
I have never had to test fuel pressure. Any suggestions on a good gauge/tester I can buy? I don't want a permanently mounted autometer or something. I also don't want to drop $500 on a fuel pressure tester. I do have a buddy who probably has one if I don't buy it. You just hook it up to the nipple on the fuel rail correct?

I have a FPR from a parts daytona I had. Should I try that, or just order a new one? Where can I get the stock Bosch brand one?
    Thanks once again!

Why aren't you diagnosing code 26 first?

Only because he smelled fuel in the vacuum line and he has an extra one he can try. If it doesn't fix it, he is out nothing.

inj. harness, they usally go bad where the inj plug is... shadow88 is right... OBD is there for a reason, yes primitive to todays OBDII standards but its a starting point... and if the INJ is stuck open you will smell raw gas... do u have a wide band??? that will tell you too if you have an open injector
