I dug out my slicks, when held up beside my tires on the car they are 2" short so it will lower the front 1", i dont think i will use them because i'am sure 5th gear will be needed by the end of the 1320.

    20x8x14 is the size.

As Corby said, use them, you won't know until you've run them.

Re: 1986 Glh omni 2.5 holset build

Guys, on the axles, I use full size G-body or equiv on Both sides. The Omni axles are weaksause, got rid of them years ago when we first started racing these cars.

Now, if your running PS you need to be carefull. You can only move so far to the right and then the PS will rub the pass side frame. You can notch the upper lip of that frame for a little extra clearance.

When you do this you Can't run the longest Daytona/ equiv axle, but you can run the shorter ones. See, there are several lengths of axles made for the G-bodies ect. If memory serves the free lengths run from around 25" to 25 1/4 (maybe 3/8). The 89-90 Dynasty axles, while being the beefiest, are also the shorter of these and are perfect for the application. PS always has lots of room to run the longer axles.

Since I removed the PS from the Charger, I moved the P/T another 1/4" to the PS and can now run Any G-body axle. Also, running the same length axles on both sides my PT is perfectly centered now, as I have about 1/4" freeplay on the axle end.

Remember, the axles will be loaded up way more than they were before as they need to squeeze together to fit. This was also a big reason we did this so many years ago, knowing that the joints would be much stronger the deeper they were engaged.

Interesting. Only thing I can add is usually the joints don't fail, its the shaft or the splines so having them pushed together doesn't really solve anything,

Also, G body's only came with 2 different axle length's, auto and 5 speed, that's it. Then of course van's, L body's and as you pointed out, the Luxury cars.

The only thing that worries me is the shft is push into the joint farther and when the suspension compres's it will bottom out, Shadow's car sits higher than mine in the front. I have have stock springs and i think he has a higher spring rate.

    But "Shadow knows" lol

Re: 1986 Glh omni 2.5 holset build

Like I said, that was our thinking back in the day. Broke my first axle a couple years ago, so I'm kind of new to this "breaking" stuff. lol

I run the Charger as low as I can on the 26" slicks. They slightly rub my upper fender liner when they grow on the high end of the track.

What part of the axle are you breaking? If you put the axle in with the swaybar in place and everything back together except the axle nut and can move the CV threaded end in at least 1/4" then you will be fine.

That's the axle you want, those are what I am running, the inner joints is wicked. You don't want hollow shafts, they simply twist.

Hollow shaft? The only axles that I've seen hollow were the long pass side shafts. Never seen a short hollow shaft.

Re: 1986 Glh omni 2.5 holset build

I went to pick n pull on sunday and got two driver side axles, 1 from a dynasty and 1 from a Spirit. We all thought that "L" Body axles only fit l bodies........ We were all wrong and Shadow is correct that Dynasty axles DO fit the L body cars. I did loosen the front mount at the rad support and the passanger mount also, I installed the passanger side first and then the driver side. There is 1/4" like shadow said after the engine is center. The only problem i had was the driver inboard clamp was rubbing on the boot, simple fix. I removed the clamp and slid the boot out farther and reinstalled the clamp.

After the road test i did not hear any noise from the cv joints bottoming out. So i guess the Dodge L body axles that were so hard to find in the pick n pull yards is the past.

A very BIG thanks goes out to Shadow for telling me his tricks for better axles!

Oem L body axle vs oem Dynasty

The inboard clamp before i moved the boot out.

After the passanger side was installed, note the abs ring that did not rub or touch.
