My valve seals always dry out if I park it for more than a month then it smokes like a biatch until I beat on it and get some hot oil up there.

Tried driving it around a bit the past few days. It smokes a lot while decelerating in gear, I can't see any smoke while accelerating but if I am stopped and hold it at 3k it pours smoke out. I'm not sure what to make of it. I was hoping the rings needed time to seat but that doesn't seem to be the issue.

The PCV tubing will suck flat with heat and vacuum... that will burn oil also.

Found the problem. An oil control ring on cylinder 3 is bent. The expansion ring shows a little damage as well. I must have damaged it during installation. Scraped up the cylinder a bit so It looks like I'm going to try to hone it and get new rings. No other real options since finances are total crap lately.

Can you take a picture of the damage?
Those oil rings can be a real pain to install since they want to slip between the ring compressor and the block when you tap them in.

Re: 3.0 Build Project: "Green Machine"

What rings are these? I have the 5 good pistons out of my Spirits first Holset motor with stock bore 91.1 chrome ring pack from Summit. If you need an oil ring these only have a few thousand miles on them and they should be good as new as far as function goes. I wish rings were easier to buy in singles, that is why I bought a whole new set when the 1 piston shattered.

Didn't find anything helpful but it looks like there is a nice off the shelf +0.020 piston ring set from JE. Chrome 1st and 2nd.

Re: 3.0 Build Project: "Green Machine"

wow, been a looong time since I posted on here. I've had the car running since early November, no smoke or anything. Runs pretty good actually. I did end up removing my OBX LSD and selling it, money got tight and I needed to make rent but hey so it goes. I'm planning on running a phantom grip when I pull the trans to reinstall my 6-puck clutch. My neon has a phantom grip in it and I much prefer that over the OBX unit. Started the car on a bit of a diet today, Cut the spare tire well out and will put a piece of sheet aluminum over the hole. Cut off some brackets and bits of metal around the rear bumper with a plasma cutter (amazing tool!) Also removed the rear bumper beam and plan to make an aluminum skeleton style bumper, mostly just to hold the bumper cover in place. Also fixed a crack in the bellhousing from overtightening a bolt.

Re: 3.0 Build Project: "Green Machine"

Interesting that you like the Phantom Grip over the OBX. I think that's the first time I've heard that. I hope it works for you. I know there have been many reports from all over (not just TM's) that they stopped working the way they should after a certain amount of time. I remember that there was talk a long time ago about getting some friction discs to install in the diff to make the PG more like a traditional LSD that use preload friction to accomplish their intended job. I can't remember how far that ever went.

Did you weigh the spare tire well and the associated brackets/reinforcements that you cut off? I think Brent did when he cut his out, but I can't remember. I would suggest doing something to prevent the air from getting trapped under the car back there. It will slow you down and could possibly make the car unstable at high speed because it would increase lift.

Are you planning to drive this car on the street? If so, I wouldn't remove the bumper all the way. Trim it, or cut material out of it...sure. My thinking here is that if something bad were to happen, at least there is just that little bit more structure to dissipate the energy to prevent you from getting hurt, plus it will help protect the gas tank (since now it has not protection). I know there are a lot of people that drive cars around with no bumpers. It's a personal choice if there are no safety inspections where you are. I just think it's not the best idea to remove it completely...even with a "frame" to take its place.

Re: 3.0 Build Project: "Green Machine"

Yeah the OBX LSD made the car difficult to control, maybe it's partially the way I drive. I only had it in the car for a week and almost wrecked twice. Originally I thought I would be able to get away with drag radials combined with the obx unit but I could still roast the tires so I'm planning on going phantom grip + slicks when money allows. I'll have to look into adding discs to the phantom grip, sounds interesting.

Didn't get a chance to weigh anything yet but it doesn't weigh as much as I hoped. I'm replacing it with 1/32" aluminum sheet though so at least I won't be adding much back to it. Good call about doing something to control aerodynamics, hadn't thought about that.

Yes the car is still street driven, I realize it isn't the safest thing to do but hey because racecar right? I just got the car inspected so I have a full year to not worry about that. I'll save the original bumpers if I need to swap em back in later.

I think FWD plus LSD makes the car pull hard to the side when you lose traction. Its one of those things that requires some sticky rubber.

Re: 3.0 Build Project: "Green Machine"

It sounds like the internal pre-load on the OBX was off. A helical LSD with proper pre-load is not supposed to torque-steer much at all, but pull straight. When my first OBX had issues (case bolts backed out and created TONS of lash and removed ALL pre-load inside the diff), it would torque steer HARD, almost changing lanes on me. Once I properly set up the replacement diff, I haven't had any issues at all, it always pulls in whatever direction the wheels are pointed. That is with probably 50+ drag passes and 20k+ daily miles on the 2nd diff.

Re: 3.0 Build Project: "Green Machine"

If your problem was drag radials, then its a bit different. My experience on street tires was a fairly smooth 2 wheel spin. On drag radials, the car would hook side to side violently as power moved back and forth and the drag radials bite violently when power drops off from that side and that tire catches up. This was worse when I had the rear air shocks Jacked up hard and tiny rear radial tires (bad choice for drag radials, fun for corners and an OBX).

Don't you have some cool parts you were making that you could have sold to me and others for money? :P

Re: 3.0 Build Project: "Green Machine"

I had Turbos unleashed prepare the obx unit with all the upgraded hardware, not sure if they did anything with preload settings or not. My main issue from what I remember was when going around a corner if I hit the gas it would pull hard in the opposite direction I was steering, It would rip the steerng wheel right out of my hands if I didn't have a firm grip.

Oh yeah I forget all about those adj. cam gears I was making, I'll have to get on that. I'll probably start a new thread here in the 3.0 section then.

Some pics of the bumper cover supports and spare tire well cover. Gonna seam seal and paint it all soon.

Also weighed a few things today

    Rear bumper 24lbs

Spare tire well/misc brackets and sheet metal cover I had inside trunk 25lbs

    New alum sheet 3 lbs

Alum bumper 5-10lbs. Didn't weigh it. VERY light though.

shaved about 40lbs off the car
