Well the escort didn't keep up after about the first 2 miles. The guy in the neon stuck around the whole way though. He even snuck around me at what had to be at least 120. I couldn't hold him while staying in 5th. We were just messing around when we could during breaks in traffic. Both cars were modded with what appeared to be really basic bolt ons but you never really know for sure.

Any Ideas what's going on? I'm still thinking the afpr will solve it but I won't know until I get it installed. If I didn't screw just screw up the trans, I'd be all over this lean issue.

I sent RPW an email regarding interest in a set of adjustable cam gears. Hoping the shipping isn't as insane as I'm thinking it will be.... I paid 60 freakin dollars to ship an upper plenum to canada!

As a current owner of a near-stock sohc neon, that one had significant mods. Mine takes friggin forever to hit 120 and probably wouldnt go much past it. My last lightly modded sohc neon seemed much quicker but was still slow in the 120mph range. My 3.0 dynasty was a lot faster accelerating through those speeds although i doubt it was MUCH faster in the 1/4 (ran the dynasty but never the neons). Im not sure why the neons seem so slow at 100+... you definitely ran into a fairly quick one if it was still able to accelerate at 120.

Ugh, tore into the trans a little bit to find this. I'm not sure what I'm gonna do yet. I guess I'm searchin for a good input shaft and reverse idler. I just had that trans down to put the lsd/clutch in and it's gotta come down again. Only had it running for 6 days! If I stumbled upon an A568 I'd consider a hybrid but that sounds costly and I've seen reverse gear carnage even with their "hardened" gears.

Destroyed the reverse idler gear, and the reverse gear on the input shaft. I'm 99% sure that reverse wasn't fully engaged when I started wheel hoppin. fml. The car can still be driven forward but I don't think I'm smart enough to drive a car without reverse.

Am I correct that the input shaft needs replaced? The FSM doesn't show how to dissassemble it and it looks like its basically one solid piece.

Yes, you need a new input shaft. Make sure you get the correct one. It looks like you have an early transmission by the way the pitch on the gears are. If you can't find that input shaft, then you will have to find an entire gear-set and both shafts...basically a whole other transmission.

Yeah its an early trans. 3.50fd from a 90 daytona. I have never heard of a 3.50fd a543 come stock in anything other than a 90-91 daytona so they can be tricky to find. I do have a line on one now but I need to make up my mind how I'm gonna fix this.

If you're drag racing why dont you fix it with a 3.77 or 3.85 trans?

The FD is interchangeable because the gear stack can come off the intermediate shaft. You can find a 3.50 FD 523 and put the gear stack from a later 543 on it. I can't remember if the later gear stacks can go on the early shaft.

I'm happy with the 3.50fd for a street car. I could potentially go with a different fd but for simplicity I'd rather stay 3.50.

Re: 3.0 Build Project: "Green Machine"

For simplicity you'd be swapping out a whole trans rather than mixing and matching one together, and at that point the install of a 3.50 vs 3.85 is identical.

I've got a solid lead on a 3.50fd trans AND parts to rebuild my current one. If a 3.85 or 3.77 would have fell into my lap I may have went that route.

Well getting the car fixed is the most important thing and FD ratio is just me being picky in your thread!

Picked up a new DD today to take some pressure off my truck and allow me to tear into the shadow more. 3.0/A543 baby!

Started pulling the motor/trans in the shadow yesterday. After much deliberation I've decided, the goal for the shadow is to run a 13 second N/A pass w/full interior. Got a few things in motion right now and the pieces will all be coming together shortly.

At least you have someplace to keep it dry. Regarding your motor running lean, AFPR will probably be fine. Long term changes in the fueling seems to take forever and ever and ever. My Spirit was at 1% long term fuel correction after a long period of time (a few months without the ecu unplugged) even though 32psi base pressure and 30# injectors is mathematically not equal to stock injectors. I don't remember if DRB2000 shows active fuel correction (whatever its doing short term as the motor runs).

Got the motor completely stripped down and found the torque plate I had made up last year. Finally getting around to using it!

Trying to decide what I want to do about pistons. I've decided to go 10:1 but options are limited.

"Rock" brand pistons from rockauto/ebay - $150 (Really don't wanna use cheap unproven pistons in such a demanding build)

New OEM Mitsubishi Diamante Pistons $390 (Can't find these oversized so they're out, too much $$ for cast anyway)

Used OEM Mitsubishi Diamante Pistons ~$50-$100 (cast, used, std bore size)

Forged Venolia/Ross/Wiseco etc. $800-$900 (3 weeks downtime and HOLY $$$) Leaning towards this though.

I think I'm going to order (1) OEM mitsu piston and send it too venolia and have them make me oversize forged versions. I really don't see any other viable option to meet my goals.

if your going 10:1 then it would be easy to have custom ones made. just send them the bore size and ring pack size you'd like and the compression height and a few other details they can sort out. because as far as i can tell the 10:1 pistons are just a flat top w/o dish anyway, right? still can dig up my wo# for you if you like, just got to find it.

Yeah 10:1's basically have an outline of the dish with virtually no depth, valve reliefs are quite shallow compared to the 8.9's. If you can find the work order # I can call venolia and maybe work out the details. That would save some time and money.

I keep looking at G54B pistons... there's one that's 3mm too tall with about that in dish... considering mowing one down flat to see.... hmmm wait.... that was maybe 3mm too tall on a setup I was considering with a nissan rod and an offset crank grind... not sure where they are in a "normal" motor.
DD1: '02 T&C Ltd, 3.8 AWD. DD2: '15 Versa Note SV, replacing.. DDx: '14 Versa Note SV << freshly killded :( ....... Projects: '88 Voyager 3.0, Auto with shift kit, timing advance, walker sound FX muffler on 15" pumpers wrapped in 215/65/R15 H rated Nexens.... and a '95 phord escort wagon PnP head << Both may need to go :( ..... I like 3.0s ... so??? ... stop looking at me like I've got two heads!

I don't think I'm ready to get quite that experimental.
