Re: 3.0 Build Project: "Green Machine"

I was having problems with my original ecu which was auto. That was the one that shel-game had modified for me with upped limiters. I got an auto ecu from the local yard and it worked great for a day and then started acting up again. I swapped a junkyard MAP sensor in and threw a new o2 sensor in, both seemed to solve the problem but it keeps coming back. Getting a little frustrated and time is very hard to come by lately.

It doesn't sound like an ecu will solve your problem and if you tried another one you might hurt it. Have you even said what the problem actually is?

Re: 3.0 Build Project: "Green Machine"

Car runs ROUGH. Can't seem to rev over 4k except in 5th gear. It just breaks up and goes full lean on the wideband, It feels similar to fuel cut I've felt in factory boosted cars. Idles terribly and shows full rich on the wideband at idle. Wideband jumps all around even at cruise and doesn't run well ever lately. still got 23mpg on a highway trip even running up against the speed limiter multiple times. Advice appreciated.

5th gear would give a very different load...not sure what other difference that would make. Full or part throttle problem?

Fuel pressure is such a pain without a port and I've been lazy. I have been planning on doing that though. Full AND part throttle issues going on.

Well, if you ever plan to boost it an in-cab fuel pressure gauge is worth the money anyway. I am "in the process" of robbing an in car fuel pressure gauge from one car to diagnose another one of mine right now. Fuel pressure readings are much more concrete than wideband readings in the sense that there's much less that can affect it so the info it gives is not difficult to use.

Dont push the red button. You hear me?

Re: 3.0 Build Project: "Green Machine"

Have you checked to make sure the TPS is ok? Being a speed/density set-up, the ECU uses the MAP and TPS to determine load so it knows how much fuel and timing to give. Coolant temp sensor is also part of the equation. Make sure it is working correctly and giving in-range output that the ECU recognizes. I think the FSM has a table on what temps will result in what output.

Also, have you done the basic checks? Fuel/spark/compression. We know we do have all 3 because the engine runs, but are they consistent for the entire engine? It could be as simple as a tune-up issue.

    Voltage sweep on the TPS?

Re: 3.0 Build Project: "Green Machine"

Yup, I'm thinking that might be a problem. I figure it like this: my generation of truck ('99 Ram) has a known problem with the TPS having a dead spot. When this happens, the computer gets all pissy and takes the transmission out of lock-up for just a brief moment and it causes a rpm surge. Mine does it when I'm cruising around 60-ish (yippie...what ALL of the highway speed limits are around here), and I intend to fix it..someday.

I've also seen TPS problems cause running issues with outboard engines.

So, if the TPS is sending bogus info to the ECU, it's going to be a very unhappy ECU and make your engine run like doo-doo.

Many years ago (2006?) My spirit had TPS issues, borrowed a scanner and saw the problem. I ended up having to swap out the engine bay harness more then once. Meaning everything in the engine bay.

Finally found my problem, wiggle test revealed a loose terminal on the MAP sensor, Car runs awesome! Also snagged some slicks recently which would be helpful if I ever race the car again...

They will be helpful this weekend if you push yourself. Every time I push myself it goes wrong though .

Re: 3.0 Build Project: "Green Machine"

Had a little bit of fun this weekend. Local dragstrip had a mopars only weekend. New personal best for the shadow (best N/A pass). Totally unprepped. Tank full of 87 gas (no perceptible knock) old 195/65 touring tires. Didn't even pump up the air shocks like I normally do. 15.25@89mph. Nothing spectacular, just thought I'd share. I lost in the first round to a new Dodge Demon at least

    My dad raced his '14 300c. 5.7 RWD. 14.16
    My brother raced his Fiance's '16 200s 3.6 AWD 15.07
The best Demon pass was 10.61

Engineering school.... Couldn't build the car the way I wanted on mechanic wages. Had to put the car on the back burner for a while. build should resume in 2-5 years.

If only the time table was that easy. Engineering school can make it worse on the same budget as another job lol.

BTW, nice times on your 8.3:1 compression n/a motor!
