I went with chrome hoping to have the best chance of avoiding a ring failure but I don't really know how much it matters since stock rings seem capable at most power levels. I know nitrous is rougher on that stuff for whatever reason (not really sure how valid this is or if people just suck at tuning nitrous).

Achieved short block status today. Going smooth so far, all clearances checked out.

Took the original 80k mile oil pump apart and it looks like it's in really good shape. I think I'm just gonna reuse it. I was going to buy a new oem one but the best price I could find was about $200 shipped and I think that money could be spent better elsewhere. This motor isn't going to see alot of miles anyway. I didn't realize the screws that hold the cover in place are actually #3 phillips head until I stripped the crap out of all of em. Luckily I had a spare pump on my mock up block so I just used the screws out of that one.

For sure, I intend to change every single seal/gasket on this one.

I never have fun with those oil pump screws and I don't speak phillips because I am not a professional mechanic who eats donuts inside of a tool truck :P
I go with, use the biggest reasonable phillips I have, put a vice grip on so I can concentrated on pushing against the fastener really really really really hard to avoid stripping. Mostly works.
That neat clean forged block brings back memories. I hope your rings seal up happy

I, for one, was happy to learn that most parts stores sell an impact screwdriver set for less than $20.. and it comes with those massive bits. It really is the best answer, probably even the intended one! They basically make those impact screwdrivers JUST FOR japanese oil pump and water pump housings.. hehe

Dont push the red button. You hear me?

ID:	45018 Got some assembly and clearance checking done. Was happy to see this motor will NOT be interference thanks to the big valve reliefs in the pistons. I originally wanted shallow reliefs but at least I don't have to worry about bending valves and such with this. Started really working with the solid rocker/big cam setup I bought off of knightmoves last year but I dunno how I feel about it yet. The rockers were modified but I know for sure that at least one of them hits the retainer and needs more material removed. I'm using Schneider 6610 springs and stock retainers. I'm a little concerned about the way the adjusting screw acts on the valve tip. It just doesn't look right. I'm not sure if long term reliability is viable with this setup. Out of curiosity I measured actual lift and found ~.385 intake and ~.400 exhaust. I have to admit I just jumped headfirst into buying his setup and I just figured I could make it work. Now I'm not sure if its the right way to do it. I'll have to dig a bit deeper when I get time. I'm concerned that nobody runs this setup afaik. There has to be a reason?

I'm trying to get back on finishing my solid rocker setup too, now that I have a car (actually 2) that I can test on. What exactly is your setup again? 4G15 rockers? Or modded stock rockers?

Re: 3.0 Build Project: "Green Machine"

I am told these are from a 3g15. A mitsu 1.5l. There is still a post over on TD in the 3.0 stickies showing everything needed to use them. http://www.turbododge.com/forums/f11...ide-lines.html edit* After a quick search it looks like that was a typo. I believe 4g15 is the correct designation.

Re: 3.0 Build Project: "Green Machine"

I have the rockers themselves, but i went with different springs, locks and retainers if i remember right. I have not put them on or anything so really I'm no help at all HAHA. However i do feel the same way you do about long term which is why i didn't jump to putting them on my heads. I'll prolly run the springs but not the rockers themselves.....

Can you run beehive spring and retainers to gain the rocker arm clearnce?

Re: 3.0 Build Project: "Green Machine"

Although I haven't looked into much I think the 3.3 springs are conical/beehive and allow more clearance. That would require different retainers, I remember ed talking about it and it was an option. I don't think grinding the rocker in that area is a critical issue though.

Yup. I have 3.3 springs with LS1 locks and retainers. You have to trim the locks though.

^ I have the same thing. Has worked well for a while with me and Ed. I have a friend who sent his g54 head to Ed to get the same setup installed.

Re: 3.0 Build Project: "Green Machine"

Yeah, I was the one who came up with the 4g15 rocker setup (well, me and Brent), but the rocker interference and ratio is why I decided to do something else.

Re: 3.0 Build Project: "Green Machine"

As others have said, going with the 3.3L spring, LS1 retainer and locks (trimmed) will help the clearance for the rocker. (ie. you won't have to trim the rocker arm.)

I think Brent was finding some long term issues with the the 4g15 rockers when he tried them... The geometry might be helped by a smaller base circle for the cam... I think there is another rocker for the 4g15 that would have better geometry, but you would need to modify the cam towers to shift the rocker over to center tip on the valve...

Re: 3.0 Build Project: "Green Machine"

Since I stopped posting on TD I think a bunch of people shared technical things that they had not tested or even come up with....and that those rockers start to slide off the valve stem at high lift and chew up the tips of the adjuster.

I stopped using them for a reason. ~1500 miles and they were dead. That was with a legitimately large cam though. I did find that modifying them to have an oil hole is a waste of time.

If you run the rockers a bit you should be able to see where its hitting and grind it down. I would want a refund myself.
I rebuilt my holset turbo for no reason and installed a turbo oil feed restrictor all because of problems I was having with the valvetrain setup.
Post 525 has pictures of the carnage.
