Thread: Is there a 5x114.3 rear disc setup that will bolt up to our cars?

Is there a 5x114.3 rear disc setup that will bolt up to our cars?

Pondering the idea of going to 5x114.3 for wheel compatibility and was wondering if any of the minivan rear disc setups will bolt up to our cars like the rear disc setup for the Spirits and Daytonas? I know there are plenty of wheels that are 5x100 for our cars, but I have purpose for asking.

What about LWB minivans? Weren't they 5x4.5?

Well I know they made a 4.5 for the minivans, just wasn't sure if they would bolt up or not. Was hoping they would like the 4 bolt 5x100 ones we can swap from a Daytona. Guess I'll just go to the yard and look.

There are no bolt up disc conversions per say but I've never looked at newer vans for swapability. Why don't you simply buy some of these-

If the rear hubs are somewhat similar, I can't imagine it being very difficult to adapt.

What about a 95 Concorde? I took some pictures today of one in the yard and it's got a similar back plate bolt pattern, but I didn't have the correct tools to pull it and see for sure. Anyone know if this is just too far fetched or has anyone tried?

The intrepid spindles are integrated and I just checked and they are not the same hubs as the Neon or TD.

So the easiest thing is probably do try and adapt the Eclipse/Avenger rear brakes.

Unless you can find a hub that is a direct replacement for the dodge one. If you could find a hub that would go in place of ours then you could simply use the Intrepid rotors because the only big difference in them is the bolt pattern.

Re: Is there a 5x114.3 rear disc setup that will bolt up to our cars?

Damn Rich, you did the work for me! Yeah, it's REALLY close, but probably the same back plate design. The rotors didn't look that thick as the ones in your photos, but they could have been worn down. But I'm with you, I think it wouldn't take much to make it work and I may just give it a shot. I have a spare car sitting around doing nothing at the moment and I bought a set of the spacers from Greg at SDAC, so I can take one to the yard next time and see if the pattern is different when I have the right tools to pull the hub. But again, I'm sure it's the same pattern.

Well looking at this picture, it seems the bolts are almost square. I'll have to go back, pull it and mark it just to be sure. Hmmmm.....

Oops you caught me in a ninja edit...

I just compared hub specs between the TD, Neon, Carvan, and Intrepid and none of them match.

I changed my original post to remove the bad suggestion but I probably shouldn't have now that you already saw it.

No problem. The Intrepid and Concordes are the same or similar, correct? I don't know, but just from my knowledge of the cars I thought they were built off the same chassis.

While you are at the yard check out the 1996-2000 minivans. IIRC the T&C limiteds and Caravan ES LWB came standard with rear disc.

I noticed that 96 and newer had a similar pattern, but it's much larger than the others. I will say, if a minivan came with rear disc with a 5x114.3 pattern from 90-95, that is what I'm looking for.

just get the minivan spindle, use LH disc and make your own caliper bracket. peice of cake.

Re: Is there a 5x114.3 rear disc setup that will bolt up to our cars?

The most I'd like to have to do is make a new backing plate for the Concorde disk or any other disk for that matter. Heck, I'd prefer to not go to 5x4.5, but hard to find the right 5x100 wheels that aren't always too positive of an offset. I'm not rushing anything on this, so whatever happens will be right, easy and take a LONG time to implement.

What wheel size and offset are you looking for that you cannot find in 5x100? Not only are FWD Mopars 5x100, but so are many Honda/Acura, VW, and GM applications. It's far from oddball.

Re: Is there a 5x114.3 rear disc setup that will bolt up to our cars?

I have a specific wheel in mind, but the offset is around 35mm for an 8 inch rim. Doing the math based on what I can calculate from a 8 inch wide rim, the 35mm offset and a tire that is about the same size as stock, I should be able to get a 225/35R17 on a 17x8" rim with a +35mm ET and not rub anywhere, save for possibly the transmission cover, which I do now anyways. There are a few rims that are made in this offset, but not the particular one I want. In fact, it's as if the manufacturer purposely did not make the rim I want in the COLOR I want with this offset. They actually make the rim with this setup, just not in the right color. They DO however make the rim in another color, which begs the question if I should just get the rims in the color I don't want and paint them the color I do want.

I know, my reasoning is out the window to consider re-tooling my car for a different bolt pattern to make one rim work, but eventually the rims I may get will wane and I'll want something else. 5x4.5 seems to offer a lot more fitments, maybe not enough to justify the move. But in the long run, if I can get other brakes to work on my car, this may be good for anyone looking to do the same. I think the drive is that I don't want to buy $1000 set of wheels and paint them before they ever get on the car. That's pretty much where this all started.

Have you considered getting the wheels you want and powdercoating them in the color you want?

Not criticizing, just offering some alternatives.

Well I'd be concerned about the annealing process the wheels went under and the effects of this. I'll look into that, but yes I have thought about doing something like that if it's "safe and effective".

Powdercoating is usually done at about 400 degrees. I don't think you have to worry about annealing. Your brakes can get your wheel hubs much hotter than that in racing conditions.

Re: Is there a 5x114.3 rear disc setup that will bolt up to our cars?

Apparently there is a process to powder coat aluminum wheels at a temp lower than 300* or at that temp, to keep things safe. I was reading through a few different forums and discussions about whether to or not to, pros and cons, etc. I'd say it's about 50/50 on success. Some have seen wheels fall apart, others have not seen any issues. I'm sure it boils down to the density of the aluminum and the variations. I'd ask the manufacturer, but you know they're going to tell you not to do it for safety concerns and covering themselves. If the local guy can powdercoat aluminum at a lower temp like what is recommended, I may go that route. It'll cost a little more, but I'll get what I want and not have to change anything.
