Transfer case differences and getting one

    recently i got a 93, 318 4wd Ramcharger
and today i was driving in a buddy's yard and the t-case got snagged on a sewer and cracked the damn thing all the way up on the front and rear of it.. (it did rip the thing out of the ground and drag it about 5-10 feet )
so im trying to figure out what different trucks i can get one out of, or if it would be a bad idea to have someone weld this case back up

oh and also if there is any skid plate made for these things

    Thanks guys,
    John

Start looking on C-L. You might find something in that price range.

You gotta pay to play with 4wd.... Thats why my driveway doesnt have any slope to it.

Re: Transfer case differences and getting one

you could use a 241 but also a 208 t-case, and those are plentifull as hell, i have had both apart side by side and there isnt any significant difference in the stock parts, from one to the next, and they are identicle casting on the outside. np 205, and np203 will require different driveshafts and likely wont adapt to your speed sensor/speedo cable output without some kind of adaptor. the one thing is is that the 241 case has room for a 1 5/8" drivechain, swapped in from a later model diesel pickup. do not weld up the case you will only run into huge problems doing so, plus you will need to take it out any way. look for any skid plate under any 81-93 ramcharger or pickup as they use the same skidplate with the off road package, also does your t-case have the steel brace that runs from the front output to the trans adaptor? if not find one and use it.

Re: Transfer case differences and getting one

if im thinking of the same brace you are thats the only thing holding it on besides the driveshafts and the being bolted to the trans,
i found a 241 and trans for $200, or a 208 for $125, what one is stronger? would not hurt to have a trans around also but not needed...

Re: Transfer case differences and getting one

in stock form they are about the same strength, just the 241 has the machining done to accept a larger chain (which you need to scavenge from a 94 and up cummins with a 241) i went the opposite way and put a 241 into my formerly 208 ramcharger back in the day, i only put the 241 in because it is all i could get for the right price, and i had zero problems with the swap, one thing to see though on older 208's they dont have the vacuum port to operate the vacuum axle disconnect, so look for one that does, or else the $200 241 is the better deal.

Re: Transfer case differences and getting one

if its got the vacuum port on top of the casting right near where the shifter lever goes into the case then yes id say your good to go, use the vacuum block from your old tcase, and double check the output yolks to see if there the same, usually they are unless somebody dicked with the tcase at some point in time. while your at it at least put new seals on the input and the front and rear outputs while you have it out of the truck.

Re: Transfer case differences and getting one

in my 86 i swapped from a 208 to a 241 due to availability and i had zero issues myself, same linkage, same gaskets, same drive shafts same machined spot on the tailshaft housing for my cable speedo (the donor was a 1990 so it had the same vss as yours). i still got the same 241 bolted to the same trans now sitting in my parents car port. i deleted the CAD on my rc and went with an earlier d44 with locking hubs, so unless the difference is in the vacuum actuator itself than i am telling you there is no difference.
