    a413 3rd gear problem

    i just rebuilt and put in a a413 trans and while up on stands i ran it through the gears first and second work fine, but when i put it in 3rd the wheels instantly stop like something binds up, and will barely move under throttle?? What can be wrong in the trans to cause this? I really don't want to rebuild it again, can it be something simple?

    Valve body issue or its possible you put the sprag in wrong. Did you set the bands correctly? That happened to me on my first rebuild years ago, can't remember exactly what I did but what I mentioned should cover it.

    do you mean the sprag are in backward or just maybe one fell out? i have a RMVB, and i tried to set the bands to spec, could it be that they are too tight?
    i heard the RMVB has the rear clutch engaged all the time is that true?

    Unfortunately i think it is the sprags ;(

    OK, so its not the V/B. Not true on the rear clutch, that would be impossible.

    Sounds like the sprag, unless you have the rear band too tight.

    I hear you, have to replace my output shaft, ack.

    Also check the front band adjustment first-tighten down snug, then back off 1.5 turns.

    You should get it done and bring it out to RMR for the last midnights.. I'll be there in the Hoopty and Erik should be there in his charger. BTW the last mid nights are from 6pm-2am on sept. 30th should be a lot of fun and a lot of passes for all

    that's the goal for sure! I want to race this thing it has been almost 3 years since its been to the track.
    I found the problem on the piston that activates the kickdown band i put the top cap what the manual calls a piston rod guide in upside down and that makes it about 1/2 inch taller and probably wouldn't allow the kickdown band to fully release when shifting to third.
    Unfortunately i found this after dropping the trans and pulling it apart i guess it will teach me to be more patient next time now to find some time this week i can put it back together.

    any tips on installing the sprag anyone?

    When i was doing them i had cut that inner race out of a junk case and i would put the sprag on that, and then put it down in the case and just slide it from that piece onto the real piece. Otherwise it's a -----! lol

    I also grind out the case so you can install the sprag THEN install the band otherwise its a royal PITA.

    that's a great idea! So you just cut the output shaft out of the center of it?

    I always forget to do that case grinding mod but i think i am going to build 3 413s over the next year so i am going to try and remember..

    i pack the sprag notches with trans gel assy lube to hold the roller clutch rollers and springs in place that way, got taught that a long time ago and has always worked out for me.

    With school i haven't had much time but tonight i put the sprags in on my first try i used a trick my dad taught me which is get a cup lid from the small fountain drink at 7-11 (or any gas station) and the lid will fit in the center and it will hold the sprags in really well! i will post a pic in the morning.
