A413 No reverse + first gear

Hey guys, I recently completed my turbo build on my Omni and began putting some miles on her. It's a lightly modified '88 T1 setup with a Garrett TB03 turbo from a Spirit R/T with stock intercooler on 10psi with stock T1 injectors.

The trans is a turbo HD unit and had only 88,000km on it was refreshed by Rob aka Shadow last year, who installed new friction disks and steels as well as the Sonnax HD rear band strut and a shift kit as well as a solid diff pin and diff pin keepers. I have a large oil cooler on it and was filled up with fresh ATF+4 to the correct level. I have put less than 500km on the engine and trans and it has not seen any drag race duty, autocross or brake boosting of any kind; it has only been driven around town and on the highway. It's done several WOT pulls from 1st to 3rd gear but never anything harsh.

From new I noticed that it had a slight flare up when shifting from 2nd to 3rd under part throttle (but the issue was absent when shifting at WOT) which I believe was caused by the front band and clutch being out of adjustment. Yesterday however I lost 1st gear and reverse entirely. I had not driven the car rough, only on the highway and then parked it for several hours. Upon returning to it I had no reverse gear at all. No pop, no shudder, just nothing. I am hoping that it's merely the low-reverse band requiring adjustment but I am unsure.

What are your thoughts on the matter? This isn't a drag only car and was to be a lightly modified summer daily driver.

    Thanks, TheCanadian

Re: A413 No reverse + first gear

The lo/reverse band it out of whack or the servo seal was damaged on install and now its gone. If it is the seal, good news is it can be done in the car by dropping the pan. The flare is caused by sloppy 3rd gear clutch packs, and/or the valve body mods not being done and/or the spring in the 3rd gear pack being too stiff.

Edit-it could be the valve body- Blue Shadow, local guy, had his rebuilt a few years ago before he knew me, didn't flare but after the rebuild, it did. I went thru it, the clutch was sloppy, nothing surprising, did the usual tricks, still flared? WTF, tried changing a bunch of things, changed the VB and it pretty well went away, but still slightly there, so it seems, maybe casting differences/flaws, some will always have it.

Thanks for the timely response, Simon. With the above cases, the low-reverse band and servo can be serviced in vehicle, correct? And assuming the valve body is the culprit, that can be gotten at too, but I suppose the only way to tell for sure is to do an autopsy and see what went wrong and where.

As for the valve body, I suppose they're all the same, N/A or turbo?

Evan, jog my memory here. Did you pick up that trans with no covers (ie. end cover/diff cover/trans pan) as they were in getting powder coated? Or was the pan on?

The flare Could have everything to do with the fact that you didn't adjust the kickdown cable when you installed it.

Also, whoever told you ATF +4 was higher friction than Dex 3 was sadly mistaken, it's actually has more Slip!

    I'll call you tonight.

The trans has to come out for the band but the servo can be done in the car, done it a few times as I used to break them.

For the valve body, any N/A or turbo works, even the LU, just take out the added springs and put the non LU plate on.

I am hoping that the necessary repairs can be done with the trans in the vehicle as removing an automatic from an L-body is a chore in itself. We shall see today what happens...

Problem has been rectified! Replacing the valve body cured the flare up between 2/3 and found a blown seal on the servo for the low-reverse band. Now all is well! Thanks again, Rob!

Good to hear. Did you do the valve body mods?

Do you mean did we re-do them on the VB that's in the trans now?

Negative. We put in a stock VB and that's what's in for now as I wasn't sure if the shift kit "pkg" that was installed was/wasn't the culprit.

Simon, what sort of mods / shift kit do you recommend for a daily driver? There is a how-to page here http://ripcuda.50megs.com/shift.html here but I have heard doing such mods creates a whine sound in reverse. Your thoughts?

The mods don't cause a whine, that link is missing one step, this is what I just told another member. Also remember, upping the line pressure raises the shift points and makes the 1-2 shifter faster, so add a hole so you can tailor it to your needs-

Get a magnetic inline oil filter and put it in front of the cooler, it is a LIFE saver, it will pick out all the little metal bits and save your cooler, worth every penny, saved my trans numerous times.

Do these valve body mods, switch to John Deer Hy-Gard or TDH tractor fluid.

This how to page is not complete. More important are the missing second and third gear feeds (remove the ball and drill the plate). Does someone have a link to Carl's page with my info on it?
