Low oil pressure/screaming sound @ idle?

I was coming back form lunch and my car just started screaming almost like a loose belt but it was coming from the crankcase as fas as i coud tell. it would get quiter when i revved so i decided to pull over and turn it off and let it sit. 5 mins later i startit back up and noise gone but still low oil pressure. The gauge is reading barely above L. Could this be an oil pump or sending unit. if it was just the sending unit i dont think it would be screaming like it was . . I checked my oil and it is full and clean. my guess is the pump but just wanted other opinions, thx guys

screaming could be a spun bearing...

What's the history? Is the PCV working properly and not pulling a vacuum in the engine?

I would first verify with a real oil pressure gauge, post up the readings then we can help you better.

Screaming from the crank case is bad no matter how you slice it... If that's actually where it's coming from...

That said, a spun bearing would cause a big drop in oil pressure, and could make a dry bearing make noise...

I'm assuming that you used to have "good" oil pressure and the low pressure you see now is a sudden symptom and closely corresponds with the noise. If that's the case, the oil pump has probably ingested some bearing bits and is scored or locking up, in which case the IM shaft is likely fubar, and might have started due to IM shaft bearings going away, which could be related to timing belt tension...

Hopefully it's something else, but, that would be my best, long-distance, diagnosis; given the current info.

well the noise happened only a couple mins until i shut it down i've had better oil pressure since and no noise but i have found trash in the oil when i ve checked it a couple times im just gonna hope something clogged the pump and by changing the oil maybe it'll be ok. i keep updates on the post thanks for the ideas and quick responses

I hate to be a downer, but with what you've said, which now includes trash in the oil, that isn't something that will go away with an oil change.

I would strongly suggest that you at least drop the oil pan to look for additional debris that could stop the pump and take out the intermediate shaft.

While you have it off it would take little additional effort to pull the rod caps to inspect the bearing for damage. If they are, and are damaged /worn out, it would be relatively easy to replace them and in doing so you would be saving your engine.

In short, unless you can afford a new engine, don't leave it to chance.

Check the mains too, you can only check 4 out of 5 but from the engines I've taken apart, it has to be pretty bad to ruin #5 for some reason.

Definitely a good idea, I mention the rod bearings because they tend to be the 1st casualty, given that they are last in line for oil, so if they aren't bad, the mains might be ok, assuming no debris got through...

Good luck, hopefully it's something that can be remedied quickly and on the cheap!
