    03 SRT4 motor in 87 Shelby Charger

Hey guys, this is my first post of many for my SRT conversion into my Charger. To start off, I've got an 03 SRT motor that is ready to mate up to a trans in order to get the mounts figured out in the car. I am going to school full time and working part time on top of it, so sadly......the car project will be only worked on when ive got a free day or possibly even during my break between semesters.

I am definitely open to as many ideas/tips as anyone can give me. Like i said before, the motor is in great shape and Ive already removed the balance shafts. I will hopefully be picking up a trans this monday from an 05 SRT. From what I understand I will have to convert to a hydraulic clutch system. Anyone know of any good links/kits for converting to a hydraulic setup?? I also need to know if the stock axles from the neon will swap right in with my stock knuckles, or if I have to get a set of custom axles made up for this project. Getting back to the engine though, I do not have an intake manifold or an exhaust manifold/turbo yet. I'm going to be doing research on which setup works the best and is the best bang for the buck. The car is currently setup with a "budget intercooler" from turbosunleashed.com so I think that I'm good on my intercooler for right now atleast. The car will have all AN hose, fittings and such in the next few days as well as the Accufab AFPR that I currently have in there. I found out that on the bottom of the AFPR the injector port bung/seal can be unscrewed and you can thread an AN 3(maybe its an AN 4) fitting and used in line and mounted remotely without worry. Ive got a Bosch 255 in tank pump installed about 1000 miles ago.

So if anyone has any input/past experience doing this conversion I welcome your input!! I will keep you all updated and post some pics to start with in the next few days.

    Thanks,
    Pat

There are a number of write-ups and project logs for people doing similar swaps to yours. I would suggest using a 523 or 568 trans in the car so you don't have to worry about the hydraulic clutch setup. As for manifolds, there are a number of cheap after market exhaust manifolds that will work just fine. You will probably have to fab up a customer intake manifold in order to get everything to fit up front.

I would highly recommend reading through these threads:

Good luck with the project, be sure to post pics!

16 valves rock, hehehe, this will be a fun project.

What are you planning on using to run the engine?

Re: 03 SRT4 motor in 87 Shelby Charger

    Engine and ECU:
I’ll be posting more build photos as I find them (they’re scattered throughout my phone and computer). The ECU that I used is a Megasquirt 3 with the MS3x board attached. I used the MS3 wiring kit to wire up my engine bay. I used some small harnesses just for the injectors and coils so that I could remove them separately if need be. I decided to go with Coil on Plug’s from a Chrysler 2.7L V6 that are powered by the additional board with the igniter’s on it. The engine is out of a 2003 Srt4 Neon and the trans is out of an 05’ with the T-850. I’m using a Stage 3 Mopar performance modular clutch/flywheel. The engine mounts are all custom made to the best of my ability (at the time). I’m also using a 60mm Throttle body out of a 4.0L jeep. For the passenger side upper engine mount I utilized the stock 2.4L mount, with the “dragon head” part of a 2.2L engine mount welded onto it. I’m running a water to air intercooler that I’ve got a separate “250cc atv radiator” as a heat exchanger for the water/coolant. I’m using a boat bilge pump (Rule 750 GPH) to circulate the coolant for the water to air intercooler. Power Steering pump is out of a Volvo S40/S50 (I believe) and its an electro hydraulic power steering pump.

    Fuel:
For the fuel system I’ve got a Walbro 255 lph pump in tank and 6AN lines running all the way to/from the tank to the fuel rail, filter, and Accufab adjustable fuel pressure regulator. I started with BOSCH 1600cc injectors, but ended up switching down to Delphi 800cc injectors due to the difficulties I came across with getting the car to idle properly. Both of which are low impedance injectors which required me to use a low impedance injector driver. The car is running full sequential and I’m in the process of tuning the fuel and ignition maps. I’m using cut and weld axles from an SRT4 with my stock k-member from the charger.

    Suspension:
As for suspension, I’ve got a 1.25” front sway bar from a Daytona bar and moved the stock 1” sway bar that was up front onto the back axle. I cut the stock ½” torsion bar and welded the torsion beam closed. (I may have stiffened up the rear end a bit too much) The front shocks are currently just stock replacements but I’m working on getting some Koni Adjustable shocks fitted. The rears are currently just stock replacements with new springs from pep boys automotive.

    Brakes:
As you can see in the photo, I converted to a manual brake setup with a balance bar to adjust front/rear brake proportion. I’ve got a 91 Lebaron/Daytona rear solid disc brake setup and 1990 Dodge Caravan single pin KH style (60mm) front brake setup, both with drilled and slotted rotors. I’m still working on getting the parking brake to work properly, I think that I just need to adjust/replace the main cable running from the parking brake handle to the junction where the cables go to both wheels.

    Exhaust:
Full 3” exhaust from an 80’s charger with a SRT4 downpipe with a QTP electronic cutoff right at the bottom of the downpipe just after the bend. Just after the cutout (when closed) there is a 6” round Dynomax straight through muffler to quiet things down a bit. At the end of my exhaust I’ve got a cherrybomb glasspack that is probably no longer good, but I haven’t gotten around to taking it off the car yet. I’ve got an Autometer EGT gauge near the exit of the turbo. To replace the stock O2 sensor I am using an Innovate LC1 wideband sensor to go to my ECU, and I also have an Autometer wideband O2 sensor that tells me the AFR while driving around (probably not ideal to use 2 different gauges/brands while driving).

Removed the HVAC system completely, it was no longer functional for heat or AC so I figured, why keep it? Saved me 26lbs or so.

Haha, I've got so much time into this project I cant wait for it to be finished. I just got the right grand caravan front caliper brackets so I'll be bleeding the brakes and hopefully back to tuning again this week.

I don't see a note on the shafts. What are those from and the mod in the middle, does that help, has it been tested? Curious if it shifts the weakness of the shaft to the smaller diameter part. Cool build regardless, thanks for posting the pics and info!

The halfshafts are stock from a SRT4 neon. I had to cut out a bit of length from each halfshaft to make the overall length right for the Charger. I cant remember the exact lengths that I had to cut out, but I've got them written down somewhere. It was right around 1.5" cut out of each axle.

Cool, thanks for the note! I didn't know if those were custom made or not. Well custom in the sense that someone was making them and selling them.
