2000 Chevy Blazer - Fuel pump replacement hints and tips...

    Howdy all,

In a nutshell, I have a 2000 Blazer (4door 4x4) and had a fuel pump crap out on me today when I went in to dunkin to get a coffee...

(I knew it was going so smacking the bottom of the gas tank doesnt work any more....)

The question is has anyone had to do a fuel pump on their blazer and if so are there any good hints/tips that I should know before diving into this?

I looked at the maintenance book and I apparently hafta drop the tank in order to get that the pump.. I have heard of doing it without dropping the tank but have no idea what im doing with chevys... Why cant it be as easy as the daytona pump, like three bolts and kablam...

Dropping the tank is the LAST thing I want to do considering I just filled it YESTERDAY......... 20 gallons aint heavy or anything....

    annnybody have some info?

You have to drop the tank and if your doing it on your back, its not fun. You basically need to support it, undo the straps, lower it down enough to undo the lines, and electrical connector and DO NOT forget the front vent line, if not removed, you will snap it off and then you'll need a new tank. Most likely, your going to have to change the fuel pump connector, its been updated, not a biggie but more work.

Thanks for the help... Any chance you have a tip on draining the damn tank?... cause 20 gallons is so light...

using a jack under the tank and just applying enough pressure on it, I should be able to get the straps off and then lower it right?

I was also told that cutting the tank straps and getting new ones is easier than trying to remove the ones already on it... is that right as well?

I never cut them off, you undo one, then slide the jack under with a piece of wood as long as the tank, slightly wider, this helps balance it.

There is no way to drain it, so you could cheat, lower it enough to remove the front vent line, undo the pump connector and snap off the fuel pump lines as your getting a new assembly anyway then let it drop, drain then install will be a snap.

Removing the driveshaft will give you more room too.

What I like to do, is put some blocks just ahead of the tank, then some long 2x4s under the tank, with the long end going right out the back and put on other blocks, or something. Make sure everything is steady, leave a couple of inches of wriggle room, so you can joggle filler out of tank if you have to, or unhook it further up.

So then, you drop the tank onto the 2x4s... then, lift them off the back blocks and lower it down, so now you've got an inclined ramp, and you can slide it down and out..... and you can get it back up more or less the same way...

Sounds more complicated than it is.... the 2x4 length required might be dependant on how high you get the vehicle, because 10 footers won't drop the tank enough if you've only got a foot under the tank.... I think for me last time it was about 2 feet and 6ft 2x4s.

Anyhoo, seemed easier to me than balancing it on one or two jacks and jiggling it down a little at a time.

    Simon mentioned something important...

The lines going to the pump snap on with a quick-disconnect kind of thing, but it is kind of a ----- to get them disconnected while the tank is still in the car, and you cant drop it too far with them connected either. It's common (and i recommend it) to snap off the part of the fuel pump module that goes into the lines instead of trying to get the line off the 'correct' way. Then once you have the tank out of the way you can get a good visual on those lines and do what you need to do to get the ends out so you can snap the lines back onto the new pump.

The last time i did one it was on a lift but i remember i spent more time messing with the filler hose than the whole rest of the project.

It's a $300-400 pump assembly so make sure you're right before you buy one and snap pieces off your old one!

If the pump still turns at all you can jump the relay and get it to pump the gas out of the fuel pressure test port in the engine bay (you should buy, rent, or borrow a fuel pressure gauge to verify the problem beforehand anyway and then you can also use it for this) but it will take a while for 20 gallons!

Or you can drop the tank a little bit, get the big filler hose off, and then stick a hose in there and siphon. You could try doing a siphon with the whole car still put together but it's a PITA to get any kind of siphon hose down the filler neck on most cars.

Dont push the red button. You hear me?

LMAO that sucks... I'm gonna bring it to my buddies shop and do it on a lift... I dont really want to mess around with this job.

HA i wish it were that easy... no turn over, no click, no nothing, that pump is completely toast... but luckily they have a gas siphon at the shop.

Thank you for all the help guys! i ordered the pump last night so we shall see when it gets here and how this job goes. Ill keep you posted!

I wouldn't be surprised if the pump is ok and the connector is melty. Seen it several times. Still worth replacing at that age anyway.
Why does everyone have so much trouble with the lines??? They are not that hard.

I do whatever seems easier at the time. That usually means trying to disconnect them, and if it doesnt work in the first 3 minutes, plan B.

Depends on how crusty it is and how much fuel is in the tank. Also, if your not a professional or you've never done it before, you won't understand how to undo them, especially when you can't see what your doing. Sometimes, its simply easier to snap them off and get the bloody tank out.

If the connector is melted, then you have to replace the pump anyhow, so either way, your screwed.

Tempo I did a while back was a bit of a beach for that, melted/crumbly connector, corroded on lines with that funny compression deally you're supposed to need a special tool for... though I figured how to get 'em off without, but can't remember how, might have just slid some strips of margarine tub under it or something. I guess it didn't actually get me stuck for long, or I'd remember.
