Valve guides- Should I be worried?

I've got my cylinder head on the bench, and noticed that three of the exhaust valve guides sit about 1/8" lower than the rest. Is this a sign of a problem, or just variation in the assembly process?

They all need replacing. They came out with guides that have clips up top so they can't slide down. Common problem.

I was afraid you'd say that.

I agree with the rest, I'm not too keen on the way it's slipped down. Since it'll need a valve job, it's a great opportunity to have the valves backcut.

have them ALL replaced and with the clips.

Besides, worn guides lead to poor valve seal which leads to some lost hp you left on the table.

Yeah, planned on that too, especially since after a week in the carb dip they're still filthy. If it's going to the machine shop, it might as well get the full treatment.

At this rate, I might as well just leave the snow tires on it.

Larry just quoted me about $375 for the full job. Ouch.

And Spanel said about $300, and I can supply the guides (since I've had that set on my shelf for a decade). However, he said it's been a very long time since he's done that kind of work. Sounded a bit unsure of himself . . . Odd.

I can have my guy do it for 200 as well. But SCB wants the valves back cut. that adds cost.

If your cat has been in your engine bay lately then maybe.

As long as your guy knows what he's doing. Anytime anyone brings up machine work in Lincoln, Larry and Spanel are always the names you hear. I've never gone to anyone else.

Mine had a 3-angle valve job done on it. Not sure if that's the same as back cutting.
