    Question SRT4 Transmission, couple questions

In the SRT4 trans, what provides the resistance to get into reverse? I know in our cars the reverse lockout stops it, and you have to pull the tab up under the shift knob. On the stock shifter, is the resistance there or in the transmission itself? Some of you folks with BMWs know what I'm talking about.

I want to make a reverse lockout for a 555, but the shifter bracket does not operate in the same capacity as the older ones with the manual lockout.

Follow up question: Does anyone have a shifter bracket they don't need?

So the resistance is in the transmission then? I can only assume since I see no provisions for a lockout on that.

They don't have a lockout except from 5th to Reverse which is part of the transaxle. Otherwise there's no need for one since reverse is to the right and under 5th. Reason the old cars have it is because it's past 1st gear to the left.

    Re: SRT4 Transmission, couple questions

Oh, the SRT4 has a 3x3 as opposed to our 4x2. That makes sense. Thats what I was asking, I am not familiar at all with SRT4s.

    By 3x3 I mean

    1...3...5
    .
    2...4...R

    and our 4x2 I mean

    R...1...3...5
    .
    .....2...4

They made more than 1 transmission for our cars? Do you have a list? When did this happen?

Early rod shifted 525 then the 520 and 555 shifted like you have, then the 523, 543, and 568 that have a shifter almost identical to the SRT shifter and have the lockout in the transmisson and have 3x3 pattern.

switch from the 4x2 to the 3x3 pattern was on the 90MY cars.

    Re: SRT4 Transmission, couple questions

I am aware of the different versions of the 80s transmissions, just not the new ones. I am assuming the cable variants came at the end of the 80s, to replace the rod shifter earlier versions.

The 520/555 used a 2 cable system. The 90's also used a two cable system that is functionally similair in design to the shifter and cable type used in the Neon/cloud cars/PT Cruiser.

    Re: SRT4 Transmission, couple questions

I didn't start this thread for a history lesson on the types of transmissions, only clarification of the SRT4 transmission. I am aware of the different shift patterns of the older transmissions, just not the SRT4's. I am making an SRT4 shifter reverse lockout for an older shifter bracket with the SRT4 shift rod, and was just curious.

    Re: SRT4 Transmission, couple questions

There are two types of SRT4 transmissions.

    One has third gear.
    The other does not.

All jokes, aside. Its is a 135/24R pattern with no lock out. Just like the T350, and T350HD version transmission. The shifters can even be swapped from 1st gen to second gen and work correctly.

That goes both ways, I had no idea you were joking in your first post, Then realized you were with your second and I was joking when I said "you started it". We really need that sarcasm smiley.
