    Engine block dowel pins removal

I need to swap over my dowel pins from my old block to new, any recommendations on what tool to use? I heard someone mention a slide hammer style tool but i dont have one for that application. Do i need to buy one or is there another way? I was going to try heat, spray and a good set of vice grips....

    Thanks

*The pins are the ones on the block surface that the head sits on

slide hammer here uses a collet that clamps on to the dowels.

I did the heat, wd40 and vicegrips thing. They will get gnarly when you are finished so expect to have to file out the destruction (i put the ugly end into the block so its pretty again). I gotta agree, new would be nicer, local metal suppliers or even HD would likely have short bits of dowel stock, shouldn't be impossible to find something that can be trimmed?

Not sure if HD has dowels.... but they can be found at any machine shop or ordered via McMaster Carr, MSC, etc...

    They might be metric.......

If using vice-grips: be real careful when you try to spin them out at the vice-grip jaw tips will put heavy scratchers or diggers into the deck.

I just used it this morning, as a matter of fact. Pulling out dowels in a flywheel so I could lighten it from 12lbs to 8lbs. The engine is a Geo 3-cyl. that the owner is putting in his ultra-light. Ported head and balanced assembly.... too. Yay.

Simon, an ultralight is one of those airplanes foolish people use that look like a hang-glider with an old 3.5 briggs and stratton lawnmower engine in it....
