90' 523 and cable operated speedo in lbody

I have a 90' 523 transmission to put in my lbody project it has an electrical plug for the speedo and the lbody uses a cable. Can someone tell me what I need to get so I can use the cable driven speedo setup on this transmission? I tried searching on this subject but I didn't find anything. Any help/info is appreciated, thanks.

You should just need to replace the speed sensor with an earlier model sensor (pre 89 i think) that includes both the 2-pin wiring connector but also has the threaded portion for the cable. Your original one from your L-body 525 should work.

So the two will interchange? They don't look the same from the outside. I'll try and see if I can just swap them. Thanks I would not have tried to just swap them by looking at them since they appear different.

just put the old speed sensor assembly (gear and all) into the new trans. it'll fit right in

Yeah they do look different but it will go right in. I dont think they even make the older design anymore, if you get a new part it will look like the sensor on the 90 trans but have a threaded portion as well for the speed cable.

Do not use the blue speedo gear. Use only the "natural" color one, or else your speedo will be off.

Thanks for the info! Tryingbe, do you know if the original trans would have that natural colored one in it? Will the natural one be correct for a 205/50/15 tire?

    mine was yellow.

it' only takes 2min to swap out gears so use what you got, if it's off just change it.

natural is the correct color for that tire size. As the others have said, you can use the old SDS, or a new one that has both provisions.

Got them swapped. Both of the tranny's had a blue gear on it. Going to try that since it's what I have. Thanks for the help.

Your speed will be about 5% faster.

21 gear tooth vs 20 tooth

The blue gear came stock in cars with 195/60r15s for reference.
