    Shock bolts unique?

    Stoopit Q coming up:

4 years ago, when tearing down the Shadow I had to resort to cutting off the top shock bolts as they just wouldn't come out (stuck in bushings I think)

Since they are long gone, was wondering if these upper bolts (and lowers, too) were unique in that they had special shoulders machined into them for the shock's bushing, or are they simply hardware store specials? Not sure if basic bolts fit as tight as oem not having play....

I took all my nuts/bolts to work those 4+ years ago and glass beaded and then sanded them. Now I have to remember which ones to use where via process of elimination...

were talking about the rear shocks eh? I know its SAE not a metric bolt. I put M8 bolts in the back of my shadow and it rattled. I believe the factory bolts would have a collar.

Crap... they are NS1 and I assume any others I pull at the JK will need to be cut as well....

I could make some.... but rather not spend a night at the shop doing so.

i would use socket head cap screws with nylon locking nuts . much easier to get the allen wrench in there, and you dont have to worry about the nut backing off

I just changed out the shocks in my shadow this morning and they are metric and 10mm. so I'm sure if you used bolts that were 2mm smaller (M8) of course they would rattle.

wasn't M8 then this was a few years back, it was almost a sung fit, one size up was too big. M10 seems a bit large. anyone know the sae size one would have to buy?

I used flange head nut/bolt combo on mine. Whatever the metric size was and of course in the proper strength grade. no noise issues and put a dab of antiseize on the threads so they dont rust solid.

What do the original bolts look like? Is there a machined shoulder so there's a minimal slip fit into the shock's bushing, or did the threaded part of the bolt fit in? 10mm bolt, would I need to make a thin-wall sleeve?

this isn't thermonuclear engineering, but if I had this issue, I'd take the shock, measure the ID of the bushing sleeve, measure the length of the bolt required, then I'd go on the hunt for the appropriate size. but that's just the way I solve my problems, using self reliance and pragmatic problem solving skills.

Damn, you're so enlightening! Thanx for the information.... even though that's what I was going to end up doing.

so why waste the effort asking others to solve such a simple problem? when you rebuild cat 3406 engines, do you contact Cat for all the answers on how to do the job? or do you figure it our yourself?

Then ask yourself this: why are you here? It's certainly not to make friends....

    10mm = .391"

so 3/8 aka .375" would be your closest SAE size

If forced to do it, go round the thrift stores, see if you can find some titanium golf club heads cheap.... then at least you can boast "billet titanium shock bolts"

Don't spose anything that was on the back of a neon would work, got some takeoffs.
