    T350/850 question

Something I have noticed that is somewhat unique to our oldschool 4/5 speed transmissions is the usage of those plastic inserts between the forks and slider ring so the slider ring doesnt grind the much softer cast fork into powder.

To the best of my knowledge no other new process/new venture gearbox before or after ours from the a833 to the nv5600 and everything in between fwd or rwd has ever used a seperate dedicated wear insert. Why is that ? What, why and how are they doing things to not need some sort of seperate insert that wont wear down with normal usage and still seems to last forever.

I really dont want to buy an entire transmission just to test a theory and satisfy my personal interest.

I am going to try and braze some bronze pads to mine and have them milled down to the right thickness.

All the ones I saw must have been totally ragged and worn out then... Because there was nothing there.

Well, my buddy rebuilt one for another friend's 96ish diesel Ram, and the kit had shift fork pads in it.

Hmm, interesting. FWIW, the pads I saw looked identical to the ones in my 520 kit.

I keep saying this, lol, bikes don't use any type of bushing, its metal on metal. The fork looks hardened and the synchronizer hub isn't, yet we never have any wear issues.

    Re: T350/850 question

Bikes don't use synchros so there is the force on the forks is not the same. A sychro transmission needs to apply pressure to the stop ring to creat friction to slow or speed up the corresponding gear. A bike uses a "dogbox" style transmission so it is different.

    Re: T350/850 question

A few key replacement parts would bring ALOT of dead/organ donor 555/568 transmissions back into service.
