Swapping Log Manifolds with engine in car?

    Hey everyone.
On my 86 Turbo Z project, the log manifold was modified to have an intercooler. I plan to restore this engine back to stock, and even maybe replace the EGR system. Can I swap out the log manifold for a log manifold without removing the head? I know with the newer style intakes it is impossible, but I remember hearing something about removing the front mount and tilting the engine forward? I basically want this engine and car totally back to stock.
    THanks,
    Lee

ive never worked on one but looking at a bare intake you could do it easily. You will have to remove the exhaust manifold too because they share the gasket.

Do you really have to change the gasket? I know its not under nearly as much pressure as say, a head gasket. It only has to hold, what? 7 PSI of boost?

You would be a lot better off in the long run replacing the gasket.

half of the gasket is going to stick to the manifold too.

I dont know about your car, but when I looked at all the studs holding those two manifolds on I think a couple were already broken and I bet a few more will break in the process. So plan on trying to extract a couple studs too.

Yeah no sense in cutting corners if I'm putting in the time to do it. I was just trying to avoid pulling the exhaust manifold too. I sure hope the studs don't break, but if they do, I'll have to deal with it. Hopefully some PB blaster overnight will lend a helping hand

ill be the devil's advocate and say dont replace the intake gasket. Ive never had one leak, and ive reused a few..

Re: Swapping Log Manifolds with engine in car?

I was able to remove the log manifold without removing the head or exhaust manifold or even tilting it forward. My only issue was one of the bolt heads stripped and I had to hacksaw the bolt head off.
