Checking cam timing with timing light?

Tried the timing-light cam timing trick today. Base timing is 12 degrees. Using my timing light set at 0 degrees (as per Simons write-up) I checked the position of the cam timing mark throught the cover: It was left of center. With the timing light set at 12 degrees the timing mark was right in the center of the inspection hole. So is my cam set properly or is it off a tooth?

Re: Checking cam timing with timing light?

If your base timing is set to 12*, then the flash happens when number 1 fires, which is 12* BTDC. So your cam should be on the left by 12* when the light is set to 0*.

So, it would seem you are OK, since your light will be flashing those 12* early, your cam would look like it was 12* off (to the left) with the light set to 0*.

The big test would be how it runs, if it doesn't feel right it might be worth actually setting the #1 piston to TDC and verify, otherwise you should be good to go...

It runs ok and pulls 17hg of vac at idle. Seems laggy though so I figured I would double check.

There is no logical reason to call an Engine a motor.
