NOS DEX-77 brings $1200 on ebay!

I thought vintage Alpine stuff was bringing good money, but this is just madness.

I couldn't tell you, but I'm sure it was probably expensive since CDs were pretty new at the time.

    Don't I wish I had a few of those!

Must have come factory on some other collectible car besides a Shelby Lancer, as I cannot believe it sold for more than most Shelby Mopars sell for on here...

Hmmm, either I have to clear my cookies because google has me "caged", or there weren't any other factory applications.

However, I did get a clue, seems that Car Audio named and reviewed it as an all time classic 2 or 3 years back, and it is mentioned that back in the day "kids" who now have good jobs and money lusted after it...

I would bet a collector bought it, you would be surprised how much some old the older audio gear sells for just to sit on someones shelf. Look at the legendary alpine 7909

My heart just sank when I saw that. I believe I threw out a radio very similar to that some time ago. I know it wasn't the exact same, but very close.

I wish I could get the part I need to fix my Alpine 7909. Until then I have to settle for a 7390 tape deck and a 5959 changer.

Re: NOS DEX-77 brings $1200 on ebay!

Most all of the Alpine Chiclet radios, CD and Tape are pretty popular right now. The pull out units especially seem to be having a renaissance lately. Units like your 7802 are not quite as popular because of their digital volume control. The passive 7903, 7904,7905, and 7909 are the ones that bring the most money right now due to their reputation as being great SQ decks. I can say for sure that the 7904 that I have, when it worked sounded great.

I think there will be even more demand for these "vintage" car audio pieces in the next few years. Of course NOS stuff in the original box always demands topdollar.

Hope a mid 90s Kenwood 6 disk changer + head unit isn't worth too much, just passed one up for $20 (Don't really use in car audio)

Re: NOS DEX-77 brings $1200 on ebay!

The older alpine radios are going for some ok money right now as well as 80s and 90s amps cause people are putting them in their restorations and want to be time specific. I have a thing for the MTX thunder amps from the late 90s. There is one in my intrepid right now runinng 150w to each door lol. Also for some reason people have gotten it in their heads the the old USA build amps/decks are so much better then todays stuff. I would say they are more durable to a degree but sound better I highly doubt it. You cant tell me those old transistors and capacitors havnt started to dry up after 15-20 years. Todays technology is just leaps aheas of just 10 years ago. The 7909 is sought after more as a collector piece than to use. People buy this stuff and it sits on a shelf, 90% of them dont use it cause really even the cheap newer stuff is alot better. The 7909 won MANY SQ comps for guys and was one of the first decks with 4v outs so you could cut the gain way down to help eliminate noise. But realistically I would rate it on the level of a $200 deck of today. I paid $400 for a panasonic deck about 8 years ago, has 3 pairs of 4v outs, aux in, subwoofer level and crossover, top of the line for back then, now you can get a deck with more stuff in it for $150 from walmart. Still works, wont even play an MP3 disc though lol.

edit- and most of us can just now afford the gear we had wet dreams about when we were teenagers

I had a stroker 12 for a while, had to sell it to a buddy when I was jobless, its sitting in his garage right now, Im sure I could get it, the suspension was really worn and with more than about 500w it would bottom out, needs a recone, there is still a company that has OE parts left, or you could just recone it with off the shelf parts but really wouldnt be a stroker then would it?

Re: NOS DEX-77 brings $1200 on ebay!

The nice thing about the old us made amps is their simplicity. They are very easy to work on, even without schematics, and the parts are easy to get off the shelf type components. The whole reason I got into the older Alpine stuff was to get a period correct stereo in my Laser. The more I looked at my early 2000's Kenwood Excelon stuff it just didn't look right in the car. Plus the wife told me I couldn't buy anymore cars, so I started buying stereo equipment instead. Sweet stroker, those were definitly overbuilt to say the least.

I finally fixed my Alpine 7909 today. I got sick of looking at it sitting on my bench at work and decided this is the month that I get it finished. Since I repair electronics for a living I just never got around to working on it, but after I noticed the layer of dust on it I knew it was time to get going on it. I slid it in my car and it sounds much more clear than the 7390 tape deck and 5959 changer that I was using.

I used to have this same radio. Sold it in the hood for $100 back in the day. The 'brothers' used to call them 'snatch-outs.'
