pulling motor/trans, where to place chains?

I'm going to be pulling out my motor and transmission this weekend and am wondering the best area to place the chain to list both the motor and transmission out of the car. I've got the hoist and load leveler so that's no issue, and I'm taking them out the top.

    Thanks in advance!

Awesome, just didn't know if I should put all the weight on the cylinder head.

That's not where I'd do it. you'll have a lot of twist because you're not centerting the weight.

Re: pulling motor/trans, where to place chains?

I know that when I did mine, I would put one bolt on the drivers side of the head that is parallel to the fender(original airbox bracket) and the other one to the back of the head on the passengers side(power steering bracket). This way I can shift the weight around on the chain if necessary as I remove the drivetrain.....

    +1 it will tilt back

I usually pull the top half of the motor off first and then use old head bolts to hoist (or lower out the bottom) the engine.

Re: pulling motor/trans, where to place chains?

I lifted my engine there and it wanted to rock, the bottom end came towards the front part of the car, it was kind of a pain to get the front motor mount in, I would suggest there as a last resort, but it is easy to hookup there though.

Pick it up on 4 points, piece of cake with a load leveler.

I like that setup alot! That is similar to what I do, but I don't attach to the trans and the front passenger side of the head. Of course, yours is MUCH more professional...

    Professional? Thanks! lol
If you compare the 2 picks, the second pic is a different engine, with the chain not mounted to the tranny, but the bellhousing. I usually pull the engine and tranny instead of just the engine or tranny, have had issues in the past trying to slide the engine and tranny together in the car.

Yep, especially with the manual trans. You're crazy if you try and mate it up in the car. Compared to most cars, these motor/trans combo's are a breeze...

    Boostgeek looks good !
I used to go pass. mount to the trans bolt hole you used
    for out the top

then I switched to the 4x4's under the motor
take off the wheels and leave the balljoints popped
    jack under the k-member
pull the motor and trans out the fenderwell

You pop the balljoints out, or they pop out when you lower the engine?
The car would have to go up pretty high to clear the engine, or not?

Re: pulling motor/trans, where to place chains?

pop the balljoints when pulling the axles, leave them out so you can lower the car enough so the motor sits on the 4x4's (or creeper) to takes the weight off the motor mounts

Re: pulling motor/trans, where to place chains?

i always remove the head when i take out the engine. then balance out 2 head bolts, one is placed at the right side (front of engine) on the passenger side, other is placed at left (backside) of the rear main.

i also found it easier to slide them under the vehicle rather then keep lifting them up and over....lol.

Might have to give that a try, although it is pretty easy out the top.

The Holset is just to phreaking heavy to lift with the head. I just assemble the whole engine, time it, and then install it.

+1. I just lower mine onto a furniture mover that has a small piece of plywood on it (to make it a single solid platform) and then roll it all out in one piece through the fender well. It is nice to have two jacks and some jackstands but it is an easy one man job that way.

Re: pulling motor/trans, where to place chains?

ahh, the out the top/bottom argument begins again.

My shadow, with the chains placed just where I showed them, I can have the engine out in about 30 minutes without removing the hood and out the top. On my spirit, the TIII does not like to come out the top so next time Its going o come out the bottom to see how that goes.
