Re: Plain Jane struts and Eibachs?

So they can go from barely moving to bottoming out?
Yup. The difference between your weight @ 0mph and the weight of the car @ 30, 40, 50mph acting on those springs is so different it's not worth comparing. Ive driven on stiff springs and bad dampers and they'll still bottom out in a heartbeat in certain conditions. This is why having properly functioning dampers has more to do with ride quality than spring rate does.

The bang is probably bad strut mounts. Or it could be broken k-frame mounts.
I cant picture how broken k-frame mounts would do this and not have other, worse symptoms.. have you seen broken k-frame mounts?

Yes I have. On my Daytona Also on Bozo's Lebaron.

I have also had dry balljoints make a large clunk/pop, but mostly when turning sharp.

HA HA HA HA! I forgot...

Pictures taken after pulling it out of the car, and setting it on two cinder blocks where the arms fasten to the frame.
Then I simply stood on it. (210 lbs)

Did that once. The left control arm ripped its mounting right off the K-member on my CSXT. I chalked it up to a combination of stress, rust*, and a weak factory weld. That was when I finally admitted it was time to strip the car down and recycle it.

*The K-member itself was not rusty. Too much oil from the previous engine. But the floors and rockers were completely gone, making the K-member have to work that much harder to keep the front end all tied together.

    I meant physically like where

But from reading this little bit, im guessing it's mostly a symptom of other problems (rust, bad welds). Ive never seen a broken one down here (tx) of the probably 20 or 30 k-cars ive gone through (most of them parts cars).

Mine broke the bottom out of the frame mount on the driver side. The left side forward mount arm on the k-frame itself was also ripped almost completely off. The car had been in a wreck a long time ago (appears like a car vs ditch maybe ), there is minor damage to the core support corner and the front clip has been replaced and the car repainted (cheaply, as the paint in now junk). Looked to me like the k-frame mount arm had been welded back at that time too, then ripped again.

Bozo's Lebaron had the driver side forward frame mount broken also, but his had come loose at the spot welds. FWIW his has also been in a front end collision some time in the past.

Hmm, so you have to weld the body part back together?

I had a hard hit in my 93 dynasty once that bent the k-frame a lot and the front k-frame mounts a little. I put another k-frame in it and used a come-along to pull it back straight. I wonder if it will eventually break.

Sounds just like my CSXT. The carfax showed a collision and was issued a salvage title in 1992.
