My freshly restored 83 Omni...
^ very nice Omni. interior pix?
Kudos on the 83's restoration, that is a lucky car.

Wow, that's pretty amazing.
ROB that is a really nice car you have, the interior is amazing. how much of the interior is original? are we seeing some type of wood-faced trim at the base of the center console? is the black plastic on the glove box stock or was that changed? is the chrome finish on the rear ashtray stock?
it is interesting to see all of the changes your '83 has from the later L44 interior. i don't think i have ever seen another '83 L44 because this interior really has a lot of different stuff in it, even the seat coverings are very different.
how about engine bay pix? thanx.

All of the Interior is Origainal. The seats, both front and back have never been touched. I added the optional woodgrain storage box and the woodgrain center console that runs between the seats. The storage box I bought New from a dealer and had to paint it to match the interior. The center console came out of an '81 Horizon and was gray in color...I just taped off the woodgrain and then painted it as well.
What you don't see is I also added the optional woodgran dash panels as well...the pics dont show it because it was not installed yet. There is woodgrain on the glove box as well as around the radio and heater controls. I also added the woodgrain shift knob. The ash tray is stock in the center console...i just cleaned it up with some steel wool and chrome polish.
1983 was the last year your could really get lots of interior options in those cars...after 83 most of the wood grain vanished...as well as the storage box and center console...they also tweeked the dash a bit after the 83 model year and kept it the same from 1984-1989.
The 1978-1983 Omni and Horizons reallly had alot of great options available that were eliminated after 1983. So When I restored this I wanted it as close to "loaded" as I could make it...This only thing i'm missing (and still looking for) is the chrome moulding that cliped onto the roof drip rails.
I'll try to take some more detailed interior pics soon.
No Engine pics because the previous owner has the car rustproffed and it's really nasy under there and almost un-cleanable
ROB knowing that the interior of your 83 Omni is original makes the car even better, how many miles are on this car? it looks brand new inside.
the info on the wood grain trim pieces is interesting to me as i was not aware Omnis were ever available with wood grain on the interior.
was 1983 the last year the Omni interiors were made this way?
as for the nasty rust-proofing gunk underhood, i know your pain, my car was the same way....get yourself some brake parts cleaner and that will melt that stuff right out of there. then post up some pix.
The car has 26,935 originals miles...i've only put about 500 miles on it in the year and a half i've owned it.
As for the options...after 83 the Omni and Horizon lost many options...such as wood interiors...chrome around the windows...bumper guards...wood grain body paneling...you could still get bright and black body moulding up until I think 1985...but NO ONE got it as part of the "SE" or "Custom" package...a roof rack that was somewhat common up to 83 became pretty much an afterthought even though it was an available option until 1988.
My 83 also has the Original dash before they refreshed it in '84...the '78-83' dashes had just a center mounted speedomete with 4 small gauges around it...in 84 chrysler added 3 large gauges incluing a tack and various other meters. the Original dash also had no rightside nameplate that they added for 84 and up models.
^great info Rob. so the 1983's really were the last of the true "original" configuration for the L44, that's interesting. i wasnt aware the dash was introduced that way, i knew the L44's were made with two different instrument clusters on the 84 and up models but it sounds like the pre-84's were unique. can you post of pix of the instrument cluster?
is the headliner a glued-on fabric over a cardboard form like on the 84 and up L44?
there is a lot of chrome on your Omni, i am just now noting all of it. are you the second owner? do you have the original window sticker for this car?
whats your plans for this car? you arent gonna "T2" it are you?
