    Identifying an 88 TBI Cam?

Okay so I found an 88 TBI cam today at the yard, the only thing that worries me is the he internals on the head looked to be in really good shape, to the point that it was probably either rebuilt or a reman head. So is there anyway to tell for sure if its the 88 cam? I know there are some numbers on the cam, but dont have anything to reference them to.

From what I have read you can't identify the cam by the numbers on it. YOu need to use a special machine to tell the grind and then compare it to the charts that are floating around.

Only way to tell for sure is to measure the cam. The numbers are for the cam blanks only, I am sorry to say. Did you pull it from a 2.5 or 2.2? Could check if the cam gear was correct. 535 Round tooth 88 2.5, 974 Square tooth 84-88.

Re: Identifying an 88 TBI Cam?

When I had my 88TBI and 89TBI side by side the lobes were visably wider on the 88. I assume this is because of the duration but I am no expert.

I know this isn't a scientific way to identify them but if you have one of each side by side there is a visible difference.

Now I am not sure if I could tell an 89 TBI from 89 Turbo or 88 TBI from 88Turbo this way especially without a known cam to look at.

Just put it in the engine and degree it. That will tell you which cam it is. I bought a cam advertised as a TBI cam, but didn't know for sure it was until I degreed it...

Good idea, I'll have to do that when I get it all together. I did pull the cam out of an 88 2.5 with the round tooth cam gear, so it would appear its the right cam but you never know. Anyone have the specs for an 88 TBI 2.5, cant seem to find them anywhere.

Here's the '89 Turbo roller and TBI compared. My '88 TBI cam measured about the same as these specs...
