    Trans Mount not holding

I own a 94 shadow with a 3.0L 4 speed auto. I am having issues with the transmission side mount not holding. So far the only thing that has come close to working is the Polybushings trans mount, I understand that this transmission's mount design is pretty poor and chrysler could and should have done better from the start. Just today i noticed that my two week old trans mount was broken causing my driver side inner axle boot to tear on the K-Frame below since the engine/trans is now leaning downward on that side. I went over a hill/bump and the axle hit the frame causing the CV joint to break and from there all hell broke loose. (not a fun drive home) I was trying to limp it back home for some Mount/Axle surgery like many times before. The center of the mount has a plastic diamond shape that the main trans bolt goes through, that plastic piece keeps breaking on me. Has anyone designed or made mods to this trans mount? I need to do something different that will support that FAT engine/trans combo, any ideas? I was thinking about welding a box shape section onto the bracket that holds the mount and filling in the rest of the gaps with Poly.

These pics are from the first mount that didnt survive, The strange part is the second mount i bought is still working on my other shadow without any problems. The mount that just broke was only 2 weeks old and i havent even put 300miles on the car, I dont do neutral slams and i am constantly thinking about the shitty 4 speed trans. I have all the other engine mounts poly as well, this just happens to be the weekest link and i need to find a way to fix it. Anyone know of a "do it yourself" polyurethane mix? or have done it to their own mounts?

Aren't some of those diamond pieces aluminum? Maybe they cheaped out and started making them from plastic.

If you want to go really cheap there is polyurethane available from your hardware store in the roofing isle in caulk tubes.

Solid mounts? You must like vibrations! What mounts fail in 300 miles? What other mounts have you tried? Any dealer mounts?

The transmission mount I got from Napa was the closest in quality to an original factory mount. All metal and no plastic.

    Re: Trans Mount not holding

The dealer's mounts are still made of cheap rubber that gets sqeezed and stretched to one side within a week, Went through ALOT of those and axle boots before i got the poly mount inserts. Usually i make it much further than two weeks, If it was every year than i wouldnt care but my luck hasnt exacly been helpin me out here, haha. Cleaning up trans fluid in some old lady's driveway wasnt exactly fun and I aim to never have to do it again. And my car has so many noises and vibrations that the solid mounts dont even phase me. 200,000 miles and a cracked fire wall and floor pan is what im workin with here, not a comfy ride by all means. I'd much rather feel the road then float on top of it while at speed. I drive so many customer's cars and they all make me car sick after a couple turns, the body roll and lack of "road feel" kills me.

This should not be happening, there is something else causing it.

Something odd happening for sure, I had one of those in last year, non-dealer, might have been moog even, damn near 1000lb more vehicle and a shift kitted A670 that is no slushbox any more... no sign of that sort of thing.

The poly mix came in yesterday and i took the mount bracket out, Just waiting to get the welding work done for the bracket. I will take pictures of the broken mount, it definetly has some strange damage done to it.

    Re: Trans Mount not holding

Your split firewall is probably letting the subframe twist far enough destroy the mounts. Installing a solid mount will just turn the engine/trans assembly into a better brace if it works at all.

    Weld the car back together.

Could it be anything to do with driveshaft angle because the springs you have on lower it???

    Re: Trans Mount not holding

I have a friend with a 92 Caravan with a 3.3 that had the same thing happen to his tranny mount. I ordered another one from Car Quest because it was under warranty and the new one had a metal center, not plastic. You might have to go to a couple of different parts stores and go through what they have on the shelf. Metal ones are out there. I can do some research at that Car Quest to see who the supplier of that mount is.

The FSM describes the trans mount as having a low friction nylon insert. They have metal ones?

The nylon insert (if present) is inside the square tube where the bolt passes through.

That's what I'm saying. The last one I bought from Car Quest had a metal insert and not nylon/plastic.

"Low friction nylon insert" = "we're to cheap to use metal to make something that lasts." Low friction!?!? What friction? The only friction it's going to see is when you center the engine and you're prying the motor one way or the other.

    Re: Trans Mount not holding

FACTORY mounts are/were ALL METAL. The 'plastic insert' is a nylon piece like a hollow pencil that the bolt went through. It has nothing to do with the load bearing capacity/strength of the mount.

The plastic insert that broke on the mount pictured is all metal on an oem chrysler mount. I should have taken a picture of the OEM mount I replaced on my car (simply worn out from age) before tossing it. There was nothing plastic about it from a load bearing/strength standpoint.
