In prep for turning up the boost, I decided to replace the knock sensor on my van. I've been running the same knock sensor for like 30,000mi (on two different engines) and never had any detonation problems at all (it might be the original to the van). Never picked up knock on the scanner or saw any signs of it on the plugs, etc.
So I installed a new Mopar knock sensor and right away the van was a TURD. I hooked up the scanner and sure enough as soon as it hit 2 or 3 psi of boost it lit up the knock retard. No matter what it pulled 14deg out of cyl #2 and 5 or 6 on the other three. In vaccum it was fine, but as soon as it hit boost (no matter part or full throttle) it would kill the timing advance. I highly doubt a 2.5L with a G-head and a stock cal is detonating at 2-3psi of boost! If it was, it should've melted down a long time ago (at I'd think!)
I removed the new sensor and wrapped the threads with teflon tape, no real change. I ended up swapping the original back in so I could at least pull out in traffic without getting ran over! Maybe it's picking up the un-balanced shortblock (no balance shafts either) or the old MP slider cam?
Thoughts?
