Crower rods: can't get cap off!!!

New problem. I'm ready to install the rod/piston assemblies and I can't get the rod cap off of the new Crower Sportsman rods! Any tips short of explosives?

I always just use my Harbor Freight BFP (Big F'n Pliers)... You know, the one's so big you think they might be a novelty? Just open them up to make the jaws parallel and lift with a rocking motion, hasn't failed me yet!

Tap the cap with a soft face hammer .

If that fails, pm me for my address, box 'em up and send 'em my way. You don't need a problem like that...

Grip the cap in a vice and tap the studs, Or do those have bolts?

Re: Crower rods: can't get cap off!!!

Don't put it in a vice w/out some sort of protection! The serrations of the jaws will fawk up the thrust areas easily.

Is/was the rod torqued onto the rod journal (plastigauge?) or is the rod totally off the engine and on the bench with the cap torqued? If so.... loosen the bolts all the way until there's like a couple threads left. Stick the cap end into a vice with soft jaws or some sort of protection and clamp only on the cap section. Then, pull on the rod itself, and at the same time... wiggle it (but don't go crazy) and it should pop right off. If not.... with the cap still clamped.... tap on the bolts with a dead blow (make sure you have more than just 2-3 threads screwed in as it could booger those up from the forces) Don't use a steel hammer, the shock can structurally damage the bolt (which you can't tell visually) as it's a hardened bolt.

I was thinking it but forgot to add it. Im used to using a rod vice or a cap separator.

Yuppers! I've seen someone seperate rods w/out using the rod vice and really marred up the sides of the rods....

OK, I got them off. I did the plastic mallet tap as suggested. Thanks for all the tips. I think the #1 problem was me being afraid of messing them up!

That's a valid concern, those things aren't JY finds, they actually cost $$$!!

Glad they came apart. I was going to say that maybe they didn't get cut at the factory and you were going to have to cut the crank at each journal to slide them on!!!
    Glad you didn't have to.

These have machined mating faces with a bushing/matching recess at each bolt hole for alignment.
