need help, looking for 900hp a413 tranny

We have a new VW drag car making 830whp 570ft/lbs and our new dogbox ring pinion, 2 step and 28" slicks is not going to good, best so far is 9.1 164mph but this manual tranny is not up to par, we just broke again this weekend at E town (drove up from Canada)

I did awhile back a built a404 case built a413 internals built by dean Stillie but case was weak and after multiple breakage and other kid on the way i let that go.

now in our new race team i have a dodge Tranny builder with 10 years experience so he can build it, i have search for best option to install proper parts but on here seems like all the best info might be found.

Should i start with older 2.2 turbo tranny and later caravan drums, 300m shaft cheetah VB, heard a transbrake is done now, etc

or start with 99 up neon NA tranny.

will the lock up tranny be better vs older non lock up.

We need to make adapter plate so don't matter will make it fit.

Im a VW guy and all terms use im too familiar so please explain.

i want to build the best i can so any shaft upgrade, planetary upgrade, heat treament i can handle the cost to a certain point.

wil be running the peloquin LSD

Fastest VW FWD is 8.72 we did 9.1 with manual i want to beat that time, will put turbo-mopar stciker on car when up and running for the help. . lol

'78-'82 omni/horizon/chargers had a vw 1.7 a413 (same internals as the later dodge 2.2 stuff) in them
which will bolt to your 1.8t
your probably not going to want to do an adapter if you can help it
our bellhousing is a lot bigger then the vw stuff and will push your axles back farther into your firewall/suspension
then you have the axle ends be different
you can use the peloquin LSD in there
the 300m shaft would be a good choice (you'll need a 904 trans stator put in your torque convertor)

Some kid used to come by bragging about his 600+ hp Shimmel built corrado but wouldn't run my omni
Found out he could only get mid 12's out of it

we ran the A404 case but was breaking case from inside and these were getting hard to find. wich is why i wanted a adapter plate, from the A404 case to A413 looks pretty close?

Hey there, I'm in the middle of building up a Neon variant of the A413.

The Neon trans is the one you want... it has all the beefy OEM parts !

Your best bet is to get one from either a 1997-2000 2.4 Caravan or a 95-99 DOHC Neon so you get the 3.2 final drive.

My build is as follows:

1) 5 Borg Warner frictions in the direct clutch using 404 steels
2) 4 Borg Warner frictions in the forward clutch
3) Borg Warner 'High Energy' intermediate band (Kevlar) - I will be welding the tabs to prevent peel-off
4) Fully welded planet pinions
5) Peloquin LSD
6) Blocked accumulator
7) Modded kickdown servo

I'm using it in my 98 Neon coupe with a 2.4 with a Precision 5857

Power output will be around 450 whp.... I would weld the pinion reinforcements but I'm not anticipating a lot of drag action with slicks.


6) Higher stall (3200 rpm) converter with billet lockup for highway economy
7) Backyard valve body mods and the Torqueflite line pressure mod

Wallace White @ Lonewolf performance had ring and pinions, side gears, and a new end cover made for the 413 which strenghtened the transmission greatly. I think Brian (turbo2point2 on this forum) built the transmissions (his and Wallace's) with the parts. AFAIK there have been no failures. Brian has run 8.90's.

if i was gonna start over with the A404 case since it botls right up to my engine, can it be made to hold as much as the straight A413, i know you can put the all the internals from A413 inside, any info on fitting that inside, last time Dean built it but can't get ahold of him right now.

Any 87+ turbo or Neon trans will work but of course, the Neon and TD have different bolt pattern bellhousings. Internals are virtually the same from 87+ so no advantage there.

As for welding the case, I have the pics of where DCR welded his up and he sleeved the pinion shaft but was still breaking them. Honestly, if your making an adapter plate, maybe consider another transmission?

You only need to run LU if your running out of RPM, otherwise its more weight/money in the converter, plus the input shaft is hollow vs solid for the non LU converter.

Match the stall to the turbo, I had a stock stall on my van with a GT35R and couldn't spool it, you probably needed 4500+

Clutch's, build your own, stock in the 1-2 clutch, add another clutch disc in the 3rd using A404 steels, Alto makes 6 clutch units but unavailable,

Post 8 covers the other stuff.

I think I can build you a trans brake, just need to get ahold of someone,

DCR still has issues IIRC, and if you watch SMP launch, he comes out of the hole so softly, its no wonder his transmissions never let go. That weekend, SMP didn't break once but IIRC, it was along time ago, DCR broke 3-4 times, transmission.

was that the pinion support area that broke off?

if so, bracing that area of the case fixes it.

you probably can still use a 404 if you brace that area. the 413 breaks there too.

Thats what it looks like to me. If the clutch elements were holding the power and the case was just letting go around the pinion, id say you're alreayd 80% of the way there and keep trying.. just reinforce the pinion area of the case. There are some pics floating around about how this has been done.

Forward Motion is good with the A413's too. IIR, DCR used to get his autos' from FM...
