Fsm direction is based upon the intermediate shaft not being installed so with the differential/ring gear installed they arnt meshed with anything else giving a false reading.

Exactly. Take out the int. shaft, or keep the ring gear off to set preload.

I just bought a 0-30 in/lb torque wrench from Snap-on to set the preload in the two transmissions I have lined up to build. It cost me $290.

Yup not cheap, but nice tq wrenches! Small tip, of course I need a .003 shim and only had .005, so I took the factory shim which is like a .055 thick and found a nice flat surface. I put down some 180 grit sand paper and brought it down to size. Make sure to turn it often and keep the pressure even, but .003 doesnt take too long and it was within <.0005 variation. Its kinda tuff to holdon to but it can be donw.

I set it by feel, lol, you want it to have a bit of resistance, but I've been doing this along time.

As said, remove the ring gear unless your pinion shaft isn't installed.

A dial type torque wrench would be easier to read but they usually cost alot more and dont come up for sale as often.

That's the one I have and use for bearing pre load. I bought it for $ 7.00 at Raceway Park, English Town swap meet in NJ ten years or more ago. Works well.

I was surprised how much resistance 10-14inch pounds really is though. My 1st check said I needed .028 so I went the .030, but that extra .002-.003 was too much. Im gonna run VR1 in it for the anti-scuff protection AND give it a sligthly over fill condition.
