N0 power steering, or convert to power?

Question for those who have none power steering cars.

How do you like it for some daily driving?

The GLH-t I have now does not have power steering. I don't think it will be that big of a problem for me to drive, but would like to have some input.

I like the ideal of less in the engine compartment, some weight savings and less possibility for something to leak.

    Thanks Greg

I have a small steering wheel in my GLH and wish I had it. If I had the salad bowl in there still I could probably live with it easily. Of course I wouldn't be able to drive it very well then, so I'll stick with the small wheel.

Power steering is nice in an L body, but I don't wanna run with a p.s. pump, just takes up too much space.

So long I'm not doing any aggressive driving, it's fine. Ie, no fast corner, counter steer, torque steer correction, etc..

Are we talking manual steering or no power on a power steering rack? I had a looped line rack for about a year and I hated the thought of having to make a fast manouver and not being able to do it. Ie being cut off. I'm happier with power steering.

No power on a power rack for me. I thought that was what the OP was talking about.

Could be, never specified. I thought a manual rack in an L body wasn't that unheard of. I never did like mine.

Not an "L" but the manual rack in my Z is easy to drive, even with slicks, BUT it takes a lot more turns to turn... not exactly an auto-x steering ratio, LOL Now the The powerless power rack in my Shadow takes some effort being the quicker ratio.

    Thanks for the input.

My car has a manual rack now. Haven't drove it with it, as soon as I bought it pulled it off the trailer and stripped it. Two cracked pistons and musty interior had to go.

I have a power rack I could install, but I am thinking of staying with the manual rack.

I am a really small dude and I have no issues driving with a powerless power steering rack.

Re: N0 power steering, or convert to power?

I drove around for awhile without power steering on a power rack. It wasnt bad. Just no handling. Went straight pretty easy lol. As for taking a corner fast, forget it. I like my power steering. World of difference. But I do drive mine everyday 95% of the time. The other 5% something is wrong with the car or weather is shyt. If mine was drag only car and not driven everyday I would remove it for weight and room.

My Sundance has no power steering...been like that for over 2 and half years. I'm completely comfortable with it and have no issues in corners or anything. The only time it sucks is when I need to get out of a tight spot from a stop...I have to really crank on the wheel then.

Re: N0 power steering, or convert to power?

I've driven cars with a true manual steering rack, and cars with a power steering rack without the power, but not looped. The manual rack is VERY easy to drive, but as JT stated it takes a bit more arm movement to go from lock-to-lock. No biggie for around town or drag racing. Not ideal for auto-x or road course.

The power rack missing the power...SUCKS!! Once you are going it isn't bad, but at a stand still is horrible. Also, if the car decides to ride a crown or pull to one side due to traction issues or the like...it WILL rip the wheel out of your hands if you aren't careful. NOT what I call fun.
