    Question about a lost key

I lost the key to my intermediate shaft pulley. I tightened it down pretty damned tight and it seems to be holding well.

Question is, do I really need that key in there? the only thing it runs is the oil pump, as I no longer have a distributor in that hole. Let me know guys, thanks!

Yes, because it can still slip. If it slips and the oil pump slows down enough, you could be looking at low oil pressure and may damage something. I would not run without one. Last engine I built, I waited until Simon sent me one before I put the timing belt on.

I would definitely say no go. No matter how tight you think you have it. It will definitely spin on the shaft once the engine is spinning.

I believe cam, i.s. and crank keys are all the same. Can't find another one laying around?

Use a drill bit of a similar size, 5/32 I think. Just cut the shank the same length as the original key and slide the pulley on. Use this as an emergency fix for the cam pulley at the Dunes in my sandrail and just left it there since it still worked.

Re: Question about a lost key

i found a key on ole clifford's engine. I felt a little emotional pulling it off, I miss the van. BUt you guys are right, I really shouldn't run it at 9700 rpm without a key haha.

No.. I had one in there before.. But somewhere between taking it out of the hoopty and taking it to the machine shop and getting it back I lost it. It's all good now.. sitting in the omni now waiting for me to get some time to wire it up and fire it up so I can take it to the dyno on wednesday and race it this weekend at MATS (weather permitting)

    9700rpm!!!
What kinda combo are you running to be turning that kind of RPM and making power up there? Or was it supposed to say 7900? Either way. Awesome!

Re: Question about a lost key

You read right, 9700.. It's built properly to handle the higher rpm. It definitely makes power up there. It's a hell of a ride when the rpm's get that high and the turbo comes to life.

I need the rpm's to get the trap speed I want with the gear ratio I picked.

Can we get youtube verification? You can make the link private if you like, I'd love some in-car of a 9700RPM TD.
