    Oil Pump Carnage... PICS!

Well a year has gone by since my problem at SDAC-15. I have finally dropped the pan and pulled the intermediate shaft and oil pump to assess the damage. Looks like the oil pump was at fault based on the shipping teeth of this oil pump. I will never use Mellings again... genuine Mopar for me. I am going to call Mellings and send them the pics to get them to send me $$ for labor, parts, and a new intermediate shaft... oh and to take the new Mellings that I already have.

    Resolution kept large for analysis....

    Re: Oil Pump Carnage... PICS!

Well first was the electronics... fake knock. We messed with the cal and pulled almost all timing out of the cal to see if it was real or fake knock. Never put the timing back in. I ran it down the track, and ran a 15.66@76.33 on 15psi. My 1/8 mile was 71mph... ran out of steam since it wouldnt go past 4300rpms. I changed the injector harness... which got it to rev more... however on that pass down the track, I ran a 15.7, but she backfired at mid track. That was the oil pump jumping and throwing the timing off. Killed me. Barely got it running again. Towed it home and left it in the garage. New soemthing was wrong with the shaft or the pump. I ordered parts but have been way to busy to fix with lots of travel for work.

The stock mopar pump in my wifes Spirit looked the same when it went out. Even the aux shaft looked the same. Im guessing its a design flaw of some sort.

Well, I thought MOPAR oil pump was also a melling pump.

Plus, I have stripped out a few oil pump gears/intermediate shafts. The count is three pumps, 4 shafts.

My culrip was oil starvation on very hard left hand turns. Seem the balance shafts also act as a oil pan baffle. Once the shafts were removed, no matter how much oil was in the pan I got the same results. Oil starvation in hard left turns. I solved the problem by switching to a common block 2.2 pan.

Fun little job it is when that goes out. Left me stranded in BFE after the races. New rod bearings, oil pump, and i-shaft. Great fun.

G'luck with the reiumbursement, Frank. I hope you get some. Heh, get sum!

Well that pretty much sucks. Now we know the story behind you carrying the injector harness' around with the agitated WTF look on your face. Good luck!!!

Luckly when she went, the car couldnt run and we only briefly got it running. I am confident that all the metal shards can be retrieved without tear down or future problems.

I dunno, but the key is that we hear horror after horror of Mellings, but not of genuine Mopar failures like this. I ordered mine from TU several months ago, however it has taken me so long to get my but in gear.

Im pretty sure the one in my wifes Spirit ES was a stock mopar one, and it did the same thing. It did have a 2.5L pan without balance shafts though. When I replaced the shaft and pump, I put on a 2.2L pan, pickup and dipstick. Its currently running a melling pump and I havent had any trouble with it for at least 15k miles. Granted she doesnt drive it as hard as I would.

There is a clear difference between these castings of the mellings versus my new mopar one. In addition, the mellings doesnt spin very well at all.

Weird Frank, could have had junk in it and just bound up. I have used Mellings for years and no issues. I would chalk it up to one of those deals but for sure try to get the parts replaced for free. In reality, theres probably only 2-3 oil pump manufacterers and Melling is one of them.

We do get bad parts once in awhile. Last week, got a no start towed in, I figured it out as a crank sensor, replace it, no start still. All my checks showed it ok so 5 hours later, after pulling out whats left of my hair, I got a bad crank sensor,
