    Cutting/Marking mandrel bends

I just wanted to see how others mark or cut their mandrel bends so that they come out right. I have never found out an easy way to make them come out right. I want to eventually build some stuff and I got a small horizontal bandsaw and I want to outfit it for mandrel bend cutting.

I use a reciprocating saw and experience. Ive done it quite a bit, and can almost always get the correct angle on the first cut. If you have a good saw and blade it cuts it flat enough to TIG weld with no other sanding/grinding.

I use pipe cutters and for bigger tubing I have a chain type pipe cutter. I use an angle protractor (I think that's what you call it) and transfer to the tubing bend. Alot of it you can do by eye once you've ruined 10 or 15 bends

Worst case you can do what fitters do and wrap a piece of card stock or thin cardboard around the pipe, and transfer the lines that way. I used to use this for marking 4"-12" black pipe for chillers and cooling towers. Dont forget the soapstone.

I found this, I am going to make various sizes from wood with a strip that will sit in a T slot on a bandsaw or set it up to ride along the edge of the table.

I might have pics at home of how I mark the pipes... then use a band saw or chop saw or cutoff wheel... add a dash of mad skillz and viola, badass pipes

    Re: Cutting/Marking mandrel bends

I buy the bends and cut em in the straight parts . . . . only place I've had to cut in a bend is in taking 3" over the axle. I sit there/lay there and study it a loooong time, holding bends up there in space, and yeah for marking a piece of soapstone but for aluminized steel, a Sharpie.

try and always keep cuts perpendicular to the tube
after awhile you'll have stack piles of tubes you can use as templets and mock-ups for other pipes

We use a series of fixtures, gauges, and check fixtures attatched to chop saws, punches, and slicers depending on the pipe, but then again I work in a factory that mass produces the stuff.
